Running out of gas mid-swap is one of the most frustrating parts of using DeFi. You have the tokens, you have the trade set up, and then the transaction fails because your ETH balance is $1.80 short.

Gasless swaps solve this. Instead of paying gas from your wallet, a relayer, filler, or sponsor covers the on-chain fee. You either pay nothing at all, or the cost is quietly deducted from the token you receive. Either way, you do not need to hold the network's native token to trade.

What is a Gasless Swap?

Applied to the blockchain, the term “gasless swap” refers to a method of executing transactions without having to directly pay gas fees in the native cryptocurrency of the given network.

The point is, in order to send funds, users have to pay gas to miners and validators who process and validate transactions. In the case of the Ethereum network and any ERC20 tokens, the gas fee is paid in ETH.

Why do fees get high? Two factors drive most of the pain.

Network demand. Ethereum processes a fixed number of transactions per block. When demand spikes — during a major token launch or market volatility — users bid up gas prices to get their transactions included faster. Fees that sit at $0.50 during quiet periods can exceed $20 during peak congestion.

Complex smart contracts. DeFi operations often require multiple on-chain steps: approving a token, executing the swap, sometimes bridging to another network. Each step costs gas. A three-step DeFi interaction can cost three times what a simple ETH transfer costs.

Sharding and L2 rollups have reduced mainnet congestion meaningfully since 2023, but Ethereum mainnet fees remain variable and sometimes prohibitive for smaller trades.

How Do Gasless Swaps Work?

Three distinct mechanisms power gasless swaps today. Each works differently, costs you differently, and suits a different type of user.

1. Relayers or sponsors.

A relayer is a third party that submits the transaction to the blockchain on your behalf and pays the gas. You sign a message off-chain using your private key — no ETH required. The relayer deducts its fee from the output token you receive, not from your wallet's native balance.

This is the model used by platforms like Biconomy and, at the protocol level, by UniswapX. With UniswapX, your order is routed through third-party fillers who compete to fill it. The winning filler pays the gas and earns a small spread on the trade. You get a gasless execution without holding ETH.

2. Account Abstraction (ERC-4337)

Account abstraction is the structured, on-chain version of the relayer model. Under ERC-4337, a smart contract wallet replaces the standard externally owned account. A component called a paymaster covers gas on your behalf — either sponsored by a platform or paid in an ERC-20 token you already hold.

Ethereum.org's developer guidance identifies this as the current best-practice architecture for gasless interactions, replacing earlier ad-hoc meta-transaction approaches.

3. Meta-Transactions

Meta-transactions predate ERC-4337 and remain in use. You sign an EIP-712 structured message off-chain. A relayer wraps that signature into a standard transaction and submits it on-chain, paying the gas. CowSwap and 1inch Fusion both use variants of this pattern. The gas cost is recovered from your output token or absorbed by the protocol as a user-acquisition expense.

Layer 2 networks — Arbitrum, Base, Optimism — reduce fees dramatically but do not eliminate them. They are not gasless swap mechanisms. They are worth using for cheaper swaps, but they belong in a separate category.

Platform Comparison: Where to Do a Gasless Swap

Not every platform that claims gasless swaps works the same way. Some sponsor the gas entirely. Others deduct it from your output token. A few only work on specific networks or token pairs. Here is how the major options stack up.

👉 Quick takeaway: UniswapX, CowSwap, and 1inch Fusion all absorb or route around gas costs through relayer and auction mechanisms. MetaMask Swaps covers gas via sponsors. Biconomy is the developer infrastructure layer for building gasless experiences into custom dApps. CowSwap adds MEV protection on top of gasless execution, which is its clearest differentiator.

How to Choose

Ask yourself three questions before picking a platform.

Which wallet do you already use? If MetaMask, start there — gasless swaps are built in on supported networks. No extra setup needed.

How large is your swap? On small swaps, the fee deducted from your output token can be proportionally high. UniswapX and 1inch Fusion tend to offer better pricing on larger trades because fillers and resolvers compete for the order.

Which network are you on? MetaMask gasless swaps cover Ethereum and several L2s. CowSwap is strongest on Ethereum mainnet and Gnosis Chain. Check the platform's supported network list before connecting your wallet.

What Does a Gasless Swap Actually Cost You?

Gasless does not mean free. The gas fee moves — it does not disappear. Here is where it goes, depending on the model.

Relayer deduction model: The relayer pays ETH gas on-chain and recovers the cost from your output token. If you are swapping USDC for DAI and the gas cost is $2, you receive $2 less DAI than the quoted amount. The platform shows you the net amount before you confirm.

Sponsor model: A protocol or platform absorbs the gas entirely. This is common during user-acquisition campaigns or on L2 networks where gas is cheap enough for platforms to cover. MetaMask uses this model on select networks. There is no deduction from your output token.

Paymaster with ERC-20 payment: You pay gas in a token you already hold — USDC, for example — instead of ETH. The paymaster converts it to ETH behind the scenes. You still pay, but you do not need to hold ETH specifically.

The practical implication: always check the 'you receive' figure before confirming. A gasless swap with a 0.5% fee deduction on a $500 swap costs $2.50. A standard ETH gas fee on Ethereum mainnet during low-traffic periods runs $0.50 to $3.00. On high-traffic days, mainnet gas can exceed $20. Gasless swaps are most valuable when mainnet congestion is high or when you simply do not hold any ETH.

Which Blockchains Have Gasless Swaps?

Gasless swaps are not available on every network or for every token pair. Availability depends on whether a relayer, filler, or paymaster has been deployed for that specific network. Here is the current picture.

Ethereum Mainnet: Supported by UniswapX, CowSwap, MetaMask, and 1inch Fusion. Most mature ecosystem for gasless swaps. Gas savings are most significant here because mainnet fees are highest.

Layer 2 Networks (Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Linea): MetaMask gasless swaps extend to several L2s. Base gas fees are already low enough that the gasless benefit is smaller in dollar terms, but the UX improvement — not needing to hold the native token — still applies.

Polygon: Polygon's native 'Swap for Gas' feature lets you swap ETH for MATIC without paying gas. Third-party relayers like Biconomy also operate on Polygon for broader gasless swap support.

BNB Chain: No native gasless swap feature from the chain itself. Biconomy and similar relayer networks cover this gap.

Oasis Sapphire: Oasis maintains dedicated gasless relayer infrastructure as a protocol-level feature, documented in its developer tooling.

The key limitation applies everywhere: gasless swaps depend on active relayer or filler participation. If no relayer is willing to cover gas for a specific pair or at a specific size, the swap falls back to a standard gas-required transaction.

How To Perform a Gasless Swap

Three platforms make gasless swapping straightforward in practice. Pick the one that matches your current setup.

Option A: MetaMask (easiest if you already use it)

Open MetaMask and navigate to the Swap tab.

Select your input and output tokens. MetaMask will show whether gasless execution is available for that pair on your current network.

If gasless is available, you will see a 'no gas fee' indicator. Confirm the quoted output amount — any fee deduction is shown before you sign.

Approve the transaction with your wallet signature. No ETH balance required for the gas step.

Option B: UniswapX on Uniswap

Go to app.uniswap.org and connect your wallet.

UniswapX is the default routing engine on supported pairs. You do not need to toggle it manually.

Enter your swap details. If a third-party filler can fill your order gaslessly, the interface will reflect the net output amount.

Sign the order off-chain. The filler submits it on-chain and pays the gas.

Option C: CowSwap

Open the Swap page on CowSwap.

Connect your wallet — MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, Ledger, or Keystone all work.

Select your assets and amount. The interface deducts the fee from your output token and shows you the net figure before you confirm.

Sign the order with your private key. CowSwap's solver network batches it with other orders and submits on-chain.

In all three cases, you sign a message rather than a transaction. That is the key difference from a standard swap. You are authorizing the trade; the relayer or filler handles the on-chain submission.

Security: What to Watch Before You Sign

Gasless swaps introduce one risk that standard swaps do not have. When you sign a meta-transaction or an off-chain order, you are trusting the relayer or filler to submit exactly what you authorized. A malicious or compromised relayer could, in theory, delay or manipulate the submission.

Three practical checks before signing any gasless swap.

Verify the output amount shown. Reputable platforms display the net amount after fee deduction before you sign. If the interface does not show this clearly, stop.

Check the platform's relayer or filler reputation. UniswapX fillers are permissioned. CowSwap solvers are audited. Unknown third-party relayers carry more risk.

Use platforms with order expiry. Off-chain signed orders should have a time limit. If a relayer holds your signed order and submits it later when prices have moved against you, you could receive less than expected. CowSwap and UniswapX both enforce order expiry windows.

OpenZeppelin's meta-transaction documentation flags replay attacks as a specific risk: a signed message submitted more than once. Reputable implementations include nonces in the signed data to prevent this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any ETH at all to do a gasless swap?

No, if the platform uses a sponsor model. With UniswapX fillers or MetaMask's sponsor coverage on supported networks, you can hold zero ETH and still execute the swap. On deduction-model platforms like CowSwap, you need no ETH either — the fee comes from your output token instead.

Are gasless swaps available on all token pairs?

No. Availability depends on whether a relayer or filler is willing to cover the gas for that specific pair and size. Niche or low-liquidity pairs are less likely to have gasless coverage. Stick to major pairs (ETH, USDC, USDT, DAI, WBTC) for the most consistent gasless availability.

Is a gasless swap slower than a normal swap?

Sometimes. Off-chain order matching and filler auctions add a short delay — typically a few seconds to under a minute. CowSwap's batch auction model runs on a fixed cycle. For time-sensitive trades, check the platform's typical settlement time.

Can I use a hardware wallet for gasless swaps?

Yes. CowSwap explicitly supports Ledger and Keystone. You sign the off-chain message with your hardware wallet instead of submitting a full transaction. The process is identical from the user's perspective.

What happens if no relayer picks up my order?

On most platforms, the order expires after a set time window and you are not charged anything. Your tokens remain in your wallet. You can then resubmit or switch to a standard gas-paid swap.
