Launched in March 2020, Solana is a third-generation blockchain attempting to maintain scalability without sacrificing security and decentralization.

Having solved the blockchain trilemma, Solana has managed to cut its gas fees significantly. So far, the platform holds a reputation as one of the most cost-efficient cryptocurrency networks with high performance.

Here's everything you need to know about Solana gas fees, the overall architecture of the network, and how to track gas prices.

What is Solana?

Solana is an open-source blockchain network providing developers with a plethora of tools and services for building scalable dApps.

Built as a rival to Ethereum, Solana performs excellently by processing around 4,000 transactions per second at negligible fees. Meanwhile, the official website claims that the network can process up to 50,000 TPS with a 400-millisecond block time.

The platform relies on the combination of Proof of Stake (PoS) and Proof of History (PoH) consensus mechanisms.

PoS means that network validators verify transactions and are rewarded for their work proportionally to the amount of coins at stake.

PoH, on the other hand, establishes the transaction order upfront. This enables validators to instantly process transactions as soon as they emerge, instead of waiting for consensus on the order.

As a result, the blockchain has achieved impressive results. The network hosts hundreds of active dApps across DeFi, NFTs, and gaming. TVL and dApp counts shift frequently. Check DappRadar for the current figures.

What Are Solana Gas Fees?

Users have to pay Solana gas fees when performing activities on the network, whether transferring funds or engaging with complicated smart contracts.

The fees, in turn, can be divided into three key groups:

Transaction fees

Solana burns 50% of each base transaction fee and sends the remaining 50% to the validator who processed it. This split applies only to the base fee. Priority fees are not burned at all. Every micro-lamport of the priority fee goes to the validator. The burn mechanism reduces circulating SOL supply over time, which benefits long-term holders by creating deflationary pressure on the token.

Prioritization Fees

Priority fees are optional. You add them when you want your transaction processed faster during periods of high network demand. The fee is calculated as: ceil(compute_unit_price x compute_unit_limit / 1,000,000) lamports. Both values are set by you or your wallet. The compute_unit_price is denominated in micro-lamports per compute unit. The compute_unit_limit caps how much computation your transaction can consume. 100% of the priority fee goes directly to the validator who processes your transaction.

The base fee split is different: 50% is burned and 50% goes to the validator. Knowing this distinction matters if you are building on Solana or optimizing costs at scale.

Rent

Rent on Solana is not a recurring fee. It is a minimum SOL balance that an account must hold to remain active on-chain. The required balance scales with the amount of data the account stores.

Once an account holds enough SOL to meet the rent-exempt threshold, no further rent is deducted. If you close an account, the locked SOL is returned to your wallet. This design incentivizes efficient use of on-chain storage without charging you repeatedly for keeping data alive.

Solana Fee Types at a Glance

👉 Quick takeaway: Every Solana transaction pays a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature, split between validators and a burn mechanism. Priority fees are optional but improve inclusion speed during congestion. Rent-exempt balances are not fees in the traditional sense — they are refundable deposits held in the account to keep it active.

How Much Will You Actually Pay? A Worked Example

Here is what a standard Solana transfer costs at different SOL prices, using the fixed base fee of 0.000005 SOL.

👉 Quick takeaway: Even at $200 SOL, a standard Solana transaction with a small priority fee costs just $0.002. The base fee structure keeps costs near zero regardless of SOL price, making token price the primary variable in USD cost rather than network congestion.

Compare that to a typical Ethereum transfer, which runs $1 to $5 or more depending on network conditions. Solana's base fee is 1,000 to 10,000 times cheaper at equivalent SOL prices. Priority fees add a small amount on top. Even during congestion, most Solana transactions settle for well under a cent.
Solana's fees remain among the lowest in crypto. The base fee is fixed at 0.000005 SOL per transaction regardless of network load. Real-time trackers confirm this figure holds across normal conditions. Some users have reported fees as high as 0.02 SOL on Reddit. That spike almost always traces back to a high priority fee set manually or by a dApp, not the base fee itself. Slippage on swaps can also inflate the apparent cost. The base fee itself has not changed.

A number of services have been created to estimate the current Solana gas prices. Below, we have listed some reliable tools that one may use for this purpose:

Solscan: This is a Solana blockchain explorer providing different insights on the network statistics, including average transaction and priority fees.

Quicknode: This multi-functional platform for blockchain developers provides information about the Solana priority gas fees.

Dune. This is a tracker designed for monitoring the size of priority fees on Solana in real-time.

DefiLlama: Famous for its comprehensive visualizations of various blockchain stats, DefiLlama features a separate report on Solana gas fees. This report can be useful when estimating the overall performance of the network.

Two additional trackers are worth bookmarking.

SolanaFees.org

SolanaTransactionFee.org

They both provide near-real-time fee estimates and historical trends, including USD equivalents that update with SOL price. Because the USD cost of a fixed lamport fee changes every time SOL moves, checking a live tracker before a large transaction is the most reliable way to know your actual cost.

Do Failed Transactions Still Cost You?

Yes. Solana charges the full transaction fee regardless of whether your transaction succeeds or fails. If your swap fails due to slippage or a program error, the base fee and any priority fee you set are still deducted. This is worth keeping in mind when setting aggressive priority fees on volatile trades. A failed high-priority transaction can cost several times more than a routine transfer, even if nothing actually happened on-chain.

How to Reduce Your Solana Gas Fees

Most users never need to pay more than the 5,000 lamport base fee. A few habits keep your costs as low as possible.

Skip the priority fee for non-urgent transfers. If you are sending SOL to a friend or moving funds between wallets, the base fee alone is sufficient. Priority fees only matter when blocks are congested and speed is critical.

Use wallets that estimate priority fees automatically. Wallets like Phantom and Solflare calculate a suggested priority fee based on current network conditions. This prevents you from overpaying during calm periods or underpaying during congestion.

Set a compute unit limit explicitly if you are a developer. Transactions that do not set a compute unit limit use a default that may be higher than necessary. Setting it precisely reduces the maximum priority fee you can be charged.

Avoid trading during peak congestion. Priority fees spike when popular NFT mints or token launches hit the network. Waiting 10 to 15 minutes after a major event often drops fees back to near-zero.

Close unused accounts to recover rent. Any account you opened that is no longer needed holds a rent-exempt SOL balance. Closing it returns that SOL to your wallet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Solana gas fees so low?

Solana's architecture does most of the work. Proof of History establishes transaction order before consensus runs, so validators do not waste time negotiating sequence. High throughput (thousands of transactions per second) spreads fixed infrastructure costs across more transactions. The result is a base fee that stays fixed regardless of how busy the network is.

Does Solana burn fees?

Partly. Solana burns 50% of the base transaction fee. The other 50% goes to the validator. Priority fees work differently: 100% of the priority fee goes to the validator, with nothing burned. So the burn rate depends on what portion of your total fee is base versus priority.

How do Solana gas fees compare with other blockchains?

Solana's base fee is 0.000005 SOL per transaction. At a SOL price of $150, that is roughly $0.00075. Compare that to Ethereum, where a simple transfer can cost $1 to $5 during normal conditions. BNB Chain averages around $0.02 and Avalanche around $0.06. Solana is cheaper than all three by a significant margin on base fees alone. Priority fees can push Solana costs higher during congestion, but even then, total fees rarely exceed a few cents for standard transactions.

Do I pay fees if my transaction fails?

Yes. Solana deducts the full fee, including any priority fee you set, even if your transaction fails. This is a common surprise for users whose swaps fail due to slippage. If you are running high-priority transactions on volatile assets, factor failed-transaction costs into your budget.

What is the difference between a transaction fee and rent on Solana?

Transaction fees are paid every time you submit a transaction. Rent is a one-time minimum balance that your account must hold to stay active on-chain. It is not deducted periodically. Think of it as a refundable deposit. Close the account and the SOL comes back to you.
