Ethereum is getting its biggest upgrade since The Merge.

This week, the Fusaka Upgrade went live on Ethereum’s Sepolia Testnet, and its mainnet launch is set for December 3rd, 2025.

This upgrade has the potential to turn the crypto market’s #2 crypto by market cap into a leader for on-chain transactions — defeating the chain’s biggest critics in the process.

Here’s what you need to know.

Fusaka Could Turn Ethereum Into a Transaction Giant

Ethereum's Fusaka upgrade is a hard fork designed to improve user experience and network scalability. It's expected to be the largest network upgrade since The Merge all the way back in September 2022.

It was confirmed at the 162nd consensus layer meeting earlier this year, with the aim of making the Ethereum network more scalable and efficient.

The previous Pectra upgrade launched in May 2025. It prepared the ground by simplifying validator management and introducing programmable externally owned accounts for transaction batching.

Combined with the blob transaction framework released during the Dencun upgrade, Fusaka aims to dramatically increase the amount of data processed by Layer-2 networks.

This could have massive implications for both Ethereum users and developers.

Layer-2 networks running on top of Ethereum now have significantly more data capacity to work with. That translates directly into cheaper transactions for anyone using rollups like Arbitrum, Base, or Optimism. The block gas limit on Layer-1 rose from approximately 36 million to 60 million gas. PeerDAS alone reduces the bandwidth validators must consume by up to 85 percent in tested scenarios.

What's Inside the Fusaka Upgrade?

Fusaka covers backend-focused EIPs designed to improve scalability and efficiency without disrupting existing infrastructure.

Behind the scenes of this hard fork, the following core innovations are being implemented:

EIP-7594 (PeerDAS): Reduces the amount of block data nodes must download, which lowers their load and boosts scalability for Layer-2 solutions.

EIP-7951: Adds support for web2 cryptography standards, which allows mobile devices to sign Ethereum transactions directly and simplifies integration with existing hardware security solutions.

EIP-7918: Links blob base fees to execution costs, which keeps these fees affordable and prevents unpredictable spikes.

EIP-7935: Raises the default gas limit for Layer-1, which increases the number of transactions Ethereum can process per second and shortens execution times.

EIP-7642: Allows nodes to share information about the range of blocks they store, which reduces sync time and makes node setup easier.

EIP-7934: Introduces a protocol-level cap on execution block size (10 MB), which keeps the network stable and prevents specific DoS attacks.

EIP-7825: Sets a maximum 30 million gas limit for a single transaction, which prevents any transaction from consuming most block resources and makes the system spam-resistant.

EIP-7883: Increases the gas cost for Ethereum's ModExp (modular exponentiation) precompile, which ensures fair pricing for heavy cryptographic computations.

EIP-7823: Sets a maximum size for each input parameter of Ethereum's ModExp precompile, which prevents extremely large inputs and improves network stability.

The testnet path to mainnet was not trivial. Fusaka passed the Holesky testnet in October 2025, a milestone that gave client teams and the Ethereum Foundation confidence to set the December 3 mainnet date. Successful testnet activation across all major client pairs was a prerequisite for mainnet deployment.

What PeerDAS Actually Does (And Why It Matters Most)

Of all the EIPs in Fusaka, EIP-7594 (PeerDAS) carries the most weight for everyday users.

Before Fusaka, every Ethereum node had to download every blob of data posted by Layer-2 networks. That created a bandwidth ceiling. As L2 activity grew, so did the strain on node operators.

PeerDAS breaks that bottleneck. Each node now only downloads a small sample of the available data and verifies the rest exists using cryptographic proofs. Validators have reported up to 85 percent reductions in bandwidth consumption under this model.

The practical result: rollups like Arbitrum, Base, and Optimism can post significantly more data to Ethereum without driving up costs. That is what drives the projected 40 to 60 percent drop in L2 transaction fees.

What Fusaka Means for Your Fees Right Now

If you use any Ethereum Layer-2 network, Fusaka is already working in your favor.

Before Fusaka, a simple token swap on Optimism or Base could cost anywhere from $0.05 to $0.50 during busy periods. After Fusaka, analysts project those costs falling by 40 to 60 percent. A $0.40 swap fee drops to roughly $0.16 to $0.24.

That gap compounds fast. Run 50 transactions a month and you are looking at saving $8 to $12 monthly just from the data availability improvements alone.

The gas limit increase matters too. With the Layer-1 block gas limit rising from 36 million to 60 million, more transactions fit into each block. Less competition for block space means lower base fees during peak demand.

Here is a simple way to think about it:

👉 Quick takeaway: Fusaka is projected to cut L2 transaction costs by 40 to 60% across all major interaction types. A token swap that costs $0.40 pre-Fusaka is expected to drop to $0.16–$0.24. These are estimates based on blob parameter expansion and will vary with actual network conditions post-upgrade.

Validators and Node Operators: What You Need to Do

If you run an Ethereum node or validator, Fusaka required a client update before December 3, 2025. If you have not updated yet, do it now.

The Ethereum Foundation published full guidance including specific client versions with Fusaka support. Here is the short version of what to check:

Identify your execution client (Geth, Nethermind, Besu, Erigon) and your consensus client (Lighthouse, Prysm, Teku, Nimbus, Lodestar).

Pull the latest Fusaka-compatible release for each. The Ethereum Foundation blog lists the exact version numbers required.

Update and restart both clients before running any validator duties.

Confirm your node synced to the post-Fusaka chain state using your client's built-in status commands.

Monitor the Ethereum Foundation blog and your client team's Discord for any post-launch patches.

Running an outdated client after a hard fork risks your node following a minority chain. That means missed attestations and potential slashing risk for validators.

How Fusaka Changes Ethereum for Users, Developers, and the Network

Fusaka is the most consequential Ethereum upgrade since Dencun. It delivers three outcomes that matter in concrete terms: L2 fees down 40 to 60 percent, the gas limit up 67 percent, and validator bandwidth requirements down by up to 85 percent. Those numbers reflect structural changes, not incremental tuning.

For users transacting on Arbitrum, Base, and Optimism, the fee reduction is the most immediate change. Dencun introduced blob transactions and cut L2 costs significantly. Fusaka expands blob capacity through PeerDAS, which allows the network to handle more data throughput without proportional increases in validator load. The result is cheaper L2 transactions at current usage levels, and a network that can absorb continued growth without fees spiking back up.

For developers, Fusaka improves the tooling environment for dApp development, expands compatibility with Web2 ecosystems, and makes mobile integration more practical. These are not headline features, but they lower the friction for teams building on Ethereum rather than on competing chains.

For node operators, Verkle Trees reduce the data storage burden on validator hardware, lowering the cost and technical barrier of running a node. Fewer hardware requirements mean more participants can operate nodes, which supports decentralization and network resilience under high demand.

Fusaka also sets the context for Pectra, which introduced the gas limit expansion earlier in the upgrade sequence, and lays the groundwork for Glamsterdam in 2026, which will target faster block times and advanced consensus features. The roadmap is sequenced. Each upgrade resolves a specific constraint so the next one can go further.

The practical summary: Ethereum after Fusaka is cheaper to use on L2, lighter to validate, and more capable of scaling without the fee volatility that drove users to competing chains during the 2021 and 2023 congestion periods.

The Road from Pectra to Fusaka to Glamsterdam

Fusaka did not arrive in isolation. It is the third major upgrade in a deliberate sequence.

Pectra launched in May 2025. It simplified validator management and introduced programmable externally owned accounts, which allowed transaction batching and improved wallet UX. Think of Pectra as clearing the administrative backlog.

Fusaka, live as of December 3, 2025, tackled the data layer. More blob space, higher gas limits, and PeerDAS together make Ethereum's data infrastructure capable of supporting a much larger L2 ecosystem.

Glamsterdam is next, expected in 2026. It is planned to introduce faster block times and more advanced protocol features. The Ethereum Foundation has confirmed it as the next upgrade on the public roadmap.

👉 Quick takeaway: Pectra simplified staking and introduced programmable wallets in May 2025. Fusaka delivers the largest fee reduction since Dencun, targeting 40-60% lower L2 costs and an 85% cut in validator bandwidth. Glamsterdam follows in 2026 with faster block times and further scaling improvements.
