It would be an understatement to say that crypto has captured the attention of venture capital firms.

Since the ICO boom of 2017, money has poured into crypto startups. As a result, countless projects have been able to finance their innovative pursuits.

But in such a high-risk investment environment, even the largest players sometimes find it hard to stay afloat.

Over the last few years in particular, VC funding in crypto has changed dramatically.

Here is what you need to know, and where the market stands heading into the second half of 2026.

What Is Crypto Venture Capital Financing?

Venture capital (VC) funds are usually created by investors who are hungry for high profits with no desire to wait around.

Unlike traditional investment funds, which pursue low-risk yet stable income, these investment pools are ready to deal with high-risk investment opportunities.

Crypto startups fall under this category, which makes them incredibly attractive to VC firms.

What’s more, these startups rarely go public due to high entry thresholds and the numerous regulations that these fundraising methods are bound by. As a result, VC financing is equally attractive to the startups themselves.

How 2017 Ignited VC Interest in Crypto

Despite being a pretty new technology at the time, the amount that crypto projects raised during the ICO boom in 2017 and 2018 is astonishing.

According to Cointelegraph, these projects raised over $10 billion in 2017 and $11.4 billion USD the following year.

Surprisingly, startups gained most of this funding from standalone investors.

But wherever money flows, opportunists are sure to try and take advantage.

Fraudsters, in 2017 especially, managed to fill their pockets during this boom. This was made especially common due to low entry thresholds and the lack of sufficient education and regulation.

According to Bloomberg, around 80% of ICO projects in 2017 turned out to be scams.

Yet the overall interest in the new technology didn’t die down. On the contrary, the blockchain industry has since managed to grab the attention of venture capitalists eager to support promising startups.

The Structure of the Crypto VC Market

Not every crypto VC fund operates the same way. Some are crypto-native from day one. Others are traditional growth funds that added a digital assets sleeve. The difference matters when a startup is deciding who to pitch.

Leading Crypto VC Firms: Who They Are and What They Back

👉 Quick takeaway: The last row is doing something different from the rest. Pantera, Multicoin, Paradigm, and a16z fund early-stage protocols and take equity or token positions. Fidelity and BlackRock are not venture investors at all; they build products on top of assets that already exist. Lumping them together obscures the fact that they enter the market at opposite ends.

Firm	Type	Primary Focus	Notable Approach
Pantera Capital	Crypto-native	Blockchain infrastructure, tokenized ecosystems	One of the longest-running crypto-dedicated funds; publishes ongoing macro research 🏆 Longest track record in the category
Multicoin Capital	Crypto-native	Layer-1 and Layer-2 protocols, DeFi, Web3 infrastructure	Thesis-driven; concentrated bets on specific protocol categories ⚠️ Concentration cuts both ways
Paradigm	Crypto-native	Protocol infrastructure, DeFi, developer tooling	Deep technical involvement in portfolio companies 🏆 Most hands-on engineering support
a16z Crypto	Hybrid TradFi-origin	Consumer crypto, infrastructure, regulatory engagement	Largest fund size; significant policy and legal resources 🏆 Deepest regulatory and legal bench
Fidelity and BlackRock	⚠️ Traditional crossover, not venture	Bitcoin ETFs, tokenized assets, custody	Institutional-grade entry at the asset management layer ⚠️ Does not fund early-stage startups

The table above is not exhaustive. Crunchbase lists dedicated crypto venture entities in the hundreds. But these five illustrate the spectrum from pure crypto-native to traditional crossover.

For startups, the practical question is fit. A Layer-2 infrastructure project will find a faster path with Pantera or Multicoin than with a traditional crossover player focused on institutional custody. A tokenized-asset platform targeting institutional clients may find more alignment with a Fidelity-adjacent vehicle.

2021: VC firms reach new highs in crypto

In the wake of the new bull run, the blockchain industry attracted more VC investments than it ever had before.

According to research from Galaxy, Q4 2021 marked the all-time high for crypto VC investment at that point: startups raised more than $10.5 billion in that quarter alone. That record stood until the 2024-2025 rebound, when quarterly totals began approaching comparable levels again.

Some notable crypto VC funds included Paradigm, Hivemind Capital Partners, 10T Holdings, and Pantera Capital.

In addition, the Houston Pension Fund joined the gold rush too, having purchased $25 million USD worth of BTC and ETH.

2022: A bear market claims its victims

There is always a recession following a bull run. But if you were to assume that this recession cooled down investors’ appetites for crypto, think twice.

According to the yearly report released by Messari in January 2023, the amount of VC funds flowing into the industry during that period has been parabolic.

However, some of the biggest crypto failures took place in 2022, and had a long-lasting effect on the investment landscape. Even some of the large players got decimated.

2023: As some firms crumble, others dive in

As mentioned above, not all of the top funds from previous years have survived the new crypto winter. Though not all of these failures happened for the same reason.

3AC, for instance, collapsed due to its excessive leverage on long positions and other crypto derivatives. Ikigai was shaken by the FTX collapse, having invested a large portion of its funds into this exchange.

In addition, there were other negative factors affecting the industry. These included the U.S. Federal Reserve’s whiplash-inducing monetary policy, which had been in place for a few years.

Crypto VC activity in 2023 was subdued but not dead. The market was smaller than its 2021 peak, and AI captured a meaningful share of investor attention that year. What changed by 2024 and 2025 was the return of capital: not broadly across all crypto categories, but concentrated into infrastructure plays that could demonstrate real utility. The firms that stayed disciplined through 2023 were better positioned to lead larger rounds when the cycle turned.

The Benefits of Crypto for VCs

While not every year has been smooth sailing, VCs have not lost their appetite for investing in crypto and blockchain.

Some key reasons why venture capitalists still invest millions in the crypto industry include:

Early investment opportunities. When a project succeeds, it means huge returns for the VCs that get in on the ground floor.
Innovative technology. Crypto’s underlying technology, blockchain, is seen as a disruptive technology with wide use cases across many industries.
Significant room for growth. Crypto is still in its early stages of adoption, with many people yet to even buy their first coin. This could indicate an opportunity for future growth and large profits.
Passive income. Many DeFi startups provide their investors with an independent source of passive income via mechanisms like staking and lending. As a result, many investors take advantage of an ROI that outcompetes TradFi savings accounts.
Decentralized nature of the supported products. True DeFi solutions cannot be controlled by a single entity. Therefore, there is no power capable of closing them or depriving VCs of their profits.

Crypto startups may also represent a promising option for VC funds that wish to diversify their portfolios with high-tech acquisitions.

Of course, there is always a high risk of running into a scam or a project failing to fulfill its potential. But as the industry evolves, VC fund managers may benefit from better understanding the landscape and making better choices on where to entrust their funds.

What Crypto VC Funding Actually Looks Like by the Numbers

Abstract claims about 'high returns' and 'room for growth' do not tell you much. Real figures do.

Q4 2024 set a quarterly record for crypto VC activity: $4 billion deployed across 687 deals. That averages out to roughly $5.8 million per deal, though the distribution was far from even. A handful of large infrastructure rounds pulled the average up sharply. Most deals were smaller seed and Series A checks.

For full-year 2025, reported totals vary by methodology:

Conservative count (disclosed equity rounds only): approximately $25 billion
Broad count (including token rounds and undisclosed deals): up to $49.75 billion

The gap between those two numbers is not noise. It reflects a genuine structural feature of crypto VC: a significant portion of capital moves through token allocations, SAFTs (Simple Agreements for Future Tokens), and ecosystem grants that traditional VC trackers do not capture.

For context, global VC funding across all sectors topped $500 billion in 2025. Crypto-focused deals, even at the high-end estimate, represent under 10% of that total. The sector punches above its weight in media attention relative to its share of overall venture capital.

What this means for a startup founder: the money is there. But it is concentrating into fewer, larger rounds at the infrastructure layer. Early-stage consumer crypto projects face a harder fundraising environment than infrastructure plays.

The Challenges for Crypto Startups in the VC Industry

Despite all these advantages, the path of crypto startups trying to obtain VC funding for their projects is not strewn with roses. There are still many obstacles and challenges to address.

These include:

A shifting regulatory framework. Regulatory uncertainty remains a core challenge, but the nature of that uncertainty has evolved. In 2025-2026, regulators in the US and Europe are actively clarifying rules around token classification and crypto asset reporting, which creates new compliance obligations even as it reduces some of the ambiguity that defined earlier years. Structuring a deal now requires legal analysis that did not exist three years ago.
Lack of understanding from VCs. Despite their focus on innovative technology, venture capitalists do not always possess enough specific knowledge to always capitalize on the best opportunities.
High competition for funding. At the time of writing, Crunchbase alone lists more than 2,600 crypto startups.
Lack of an established track record. Many of the crypto startups seek VC investments while their projects are still at an early stage. Therefore, they may lack a proven record of an established user base, let alone a viable product.
Security concerns. The crypto industry has been faced with many large hacking events and failures, resulting in huge monetary losses. This makes some VC investors cautious and unwilling to invest in the developing crypto landscape.

Where Crypto VC Money Is Flowing in 2026

The 2024-2025 rebound in crypto VC looked very different from the 2021 bull market. Fewer deals. Larger checks. And a sharp pivot toward infrastructure over consumer applications.

Q4 2024 was a turning point. Crypto venture funding hit $4 billion across 687 deals in that single quarter, the highest quarterly total in years, driven primarily by infrastructure bets on exchanges, custody platforms, and Layer-2 networks.

By 2025, full-year totals ranged from roughly $25 billion to nearly $50 billion depending on how trackers counted token rounds and undisclosed deals. The wide spread reflects methodology differences, not chaos in the market.

Three themes dominated where capital went.

1. Infrastructure above everything else

Layer-1 and Layer-2 protocols, custody solutions, liquidity infrastructure, and on-chain settlement rails attracted the largest individual rounds. Firms like Pantera Capital framed this as a structural shift: VCs are now building the financial plumbing of Web3 rather than betting on consumer apps. This mirrors how early internet investors funded servers and payment rails before social networks became viable.

2. AI and crypto converging

The question in 2024 was whether AI and crypto would find common ground. By 2025-2026, the answer was yes. AI agents interfacing with on-chain finance, tokenized compute markets, and AI-augmented trading infrastructure became documented investment themes, not speculation. Pantera Capital's ongoing research in 2026 explicitly covers this convergence as a primary thesis area.

3. Tokenized real-world assets gaining traction

On-chain representations of traditional financial assets, including bonds, real estate, and private credit, drew serious capital-market attention from both crypto-native funds and traditional VC crossover players. FT Partners' May 2026 Crypto and Blockchain Financing report documented this as one of the most active deal categories in the current cycle.

How Crypto Startups Actually Get Funded: A Practical Guide

Knowing that crypto VC exists is not the same as knowing how to access it. The process has a shape.

Stage 1: Pre-seed and grants

Most crypto projects begin with ecosystem grants rather than institutional VC. Protocols like Ethereum, Solana, and Polkadot run grant programs that fund early development without requiring equity or token dilution. These are the lowest-friction first dollar a crypto startup can raise.

Stage 2: Seed rounds from crypto-native funds

Once a project has a working prototype or a credible whitepaper with a technical team, seed rounds from crypto-native funds become accessible. Typical seed checks range from $500,000 to $3 million. Investors at this stage want to see a clear thesis on why the protocol or product needs to exist on-chain.

Stage 3: Series A and token rounds

Projects with demonstrated traction, whether measured in active wallets, transaction volume, or TVL, can pursue Series A equity rounds or structured token sales. This is where larger funds like Pantera or a16z Crypto typically enter. Round sizes at this stage commonly range from $10 million to $50 million.

Stage 4: Growth rounds and crossover capital

Projects approaching protocol maturity or significant revenue may attract crossover capital from traditional growth funds or institutional players. At this stage, tokenized equity structures and hybrid instruments become more common.

What makes a crypto startup fundable right now:

A clear infrastructure use case (not a consumer app without a protocol layer)
A credible technical team with verifiable on-chain or open-source history
Tokenomics that align incentives without creating obvious regulatory exposure
Traction metrics that translate to non-crypto investors (revenue, active users, or TVL growth rate)
