<a href="https://metamask.io/card">MetaMask</a> has launched its Mastercard-powered crypto debit card nationwide in the United States. Users can now spend digital assets directly from their self-custody wallets at any merchant accepting Mastercard.
The product piloted in the UK and EU throughout 2024. It converts crypto to fiat only at the moment of purchase. No need to load funds onto a custodial card beforehand.
The timing&#x27;s notable. The Consensys-developed Ethereum wallet is pushing hard to deepen user engagement. It recently launched mUSD—an Ethereum-based stablecoin issued by Stripe. It&#x27;s also confirmed plans for a native MetaMask token. That&#x27;s backed by a $30 million rewards program.
&quot;Users don&#x27;t have to entrust funds to a third party beforehand,&quot; Ale Machado, Staff Product Manager at MetaMask, said in the official announcement.
The card targets crypto-native users holding stablecoins and other digital assets. MetaMask calls it &quot;real everyday utility.&quot; You don&#x27;t have to abandon self-custody principles.
MetaMask&#x27;s offering both free virtual and physical cards. There&#x27;s also a premium Metal Card subscription priced at $199 annually. The premium tier delivers up to 3% cashback on the first $10,000 in yearly spending. That&#x27;s triple the 1% available to standard cardholders. It includes perks like no foreign transaction fees, elevated spending and ATM limits, travel discounts through Entravel, and access to exclusive events.
All users must complete identity verification and compliance checks to access the card. MetaMask says it&#x27;s a requirement designed to align with regulatory expectations for payment cards. The verification process represents a necessary compromise. You&#x27;re balancing decentralization ideals against operating within regulated payments infrastructure.
Success won&#x27;t be measured simply by signup numbers. Machado said it&#x27;s about whether the card becomes part of users&#x27; daily routines. Pilot users in the UK and EU treated it like any other card in their physical wallet. MetaMask hopes to replicate that behavior across its U.S. customer base.
The MetaMask Card could normalize spending directly from self-custodied wallets. Widely adopted? It could make the underlying crypto infrastructure largely invisible to consumers. Digital assets gradually integrate into mainstream commerce.
The card&#x27;s expansion into the U.S. market represents a significant test. MetaMask&#x27;s largest user base is here. Can everyday crypto payments gain traction beyond the enthusiast community? That community has historically dominated self-custody wallet usage. We&#x27;re about to find out.
