Italy’s largest bank has quietly built one of Europe’s most significant institutional crypto portfolios. Intesa Sanpaolo filed its Q1 2026 Form 13F-HR with the SEC on May 15, 2026. Total exposure to U.S.-listed crypto assets: approximately $235 million as of March 31, 2026. The headline move was a first-ever position in BlackRock’s iShares <a href="https://www.thecoinzone.com/news/ethereum-foundation-22517-eth-staking-move/" data-wpil-monitor-id="2820">Staked Ethereum</a> Trust. That’s the bank’s entry into <a href="https://www.thecoinzone.com/news/us-ethereum-etfs-501m-outflows-june-whale-rotation/" data-wpil-monitor-id="2817">Ethereum ETF</a> exposure.
<a href="https://www.coindesk.com/es/business/2026/02/17/banking-giant-intesa-sanapolo-discloses-usd100-million-bitcoin-etf-holdings-along-with-strategy-hedge" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CoinDesk</a> reported in February 2026 that the bank held roughly $100 <a href="https://www.thecoinzone.com/news/crypto-pacs-influence-2025-elections/" data-wpil-monitor-id="2824">million in crypto</a> at year-end 2025. That portfolio was concentrated in <a href="https://www.thecoinzone.com/news/ethereum-etf-outflows-273-million-sharplink-on-chain/" data-wpil-monitor-id="2815">Bitcoin ETFs</a>. Q1 2026 tells a different story. Holdings roughly doubled.
SpazioCrypto’s synthesis of the filing shows a call option on BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT). Notional value: approximately $95.9 million. The bank also maintained its ARK 21Shares <a href="https://www.thecoinzone.com/blockchain/btc-etf-explained/" data-wpil-monitor-id="2822">Bitcoin ETF</a> position. It added exposure to the Grayscale XRP Trust ETF. That position was valued at approximately $18 million at March 31, 2026.
The 13F-HR covers 219 total holdings. Combined reported value: approximately $1.692 billion. It was signed by Eleonora Pezzino and filed May 15, 2026, per the primary filing document. Form 13F-HR filings are required quarterly from institutional managers overseeing more than $100 million in U.S.-listed securities. They’re one of the most reliable windows into institutional positioning.
The Ethereum entry is drawing the most attention. Intesa Sanpaolo’s move into the iShares Staked Ethereum Trust signals something specific. The bank’s own trajectory reinforces that. In early 2025, Intesa Sanpaolo made headlines as one of the first <a href="https://www.thecoinzone.com/news/european-banks-launch-mica-stablecoins/" data-wpil-monitor-id="2818">European banks</a> to disclose a direct Bitcoin purchase on its own balance sheet. By Q1 2026, it had expanded into derivatives, a new layer-1 asset, and a staking-based ETF product. All of it documented through SEC filings.
CheckSig’s June 5, 2026 analysis of the 13F data emphasized the balance-sheet nature of the holdings. The bank’s <a href="https://www.thecoinzone.com/pls-369-sponsor-highlight/" data-wpil-monitor-id="2814">crypto exposure</a> spans spot ETFs, derivatives, and staking products. That structure is deliberate.
The filing lands <a href="https://www.thecoinzone.com/news/vitalik-buterin-sells-eth-market-downturn/" data-wpil-monitor-id="2819">amid broader</a> bullish sentiment around Ethereum. LunarCrush data puts ETH’s Galaxy Score at 72.2 with an upward trend. Across 40.4 million total social interactions, sentiment is running 80% bullish. Separately, <a href="https://www.thecoinzone.com/defi/fighting-for-cryptos-future-how-to-write-effective-policy-comments/" data-wpil-monitor-id="2823">crypto commentator</a> AshCrypto, who has 2.16 million followers on X, reportedly highlighted a single whale accumulating approximately $208 million in ETH over three weeks. The specific wallet and on-chain source haven’t been independently confirmed.
It’s not yet clear whether Intesa Sanpaolo’s Q1 disclosures represent the leading edge of a broader European institutional rotation into <a href="https://www.thecoinzone.com/news/citigroup-slashes-ethereum-price-target-etf-flows-negative/" data-wpil-monitor-id="2821">Ethereum ETFs</a>.
