A viral post this week accused Coinbase of a glaring contradiction. The claim: Coinbase builds major revenue on Ethereum but keeps ETH off its corporate balance sheet. It spread fast. Roughly 29,000 interactions in the ETH conversation bucket, tracked by LunarCrush. There's one problem. Coinbase's own disclosures say it does hold ETH.
The post came from crypto commentator @TedPillows on X. The argument was simple. Coinbase runs Base, an Ethereum Layer 2. It earns revenue from ETH spot and derivatives trading. It offers Ethereum staking through Coinbase Prime and cbETH. So how does a company that commercially dependent on Ethereum not back that with treasury dollars?
It landed. LunarCrush flagged it as one of the highest-engagement organic posts of the day in the ETH category. It outperformed price feeds and exchange promotions on raw interaction volume.
But Coinbase's Digital Asset Disclosures page tells a different story. Updated as of March 31, 2026. ETH is listed under U.S. trading assets. "Coinbase Holding" is marked yes. The company updates holdings quarterly. The viral premise doesn't hold up against Coinbase's own published documentation.
Third-party data adds some numbers. CoinGecko's Ethereum treasury tracker estimates Coinbase holds approximately 150,000 ETH as of mid-2026. That's CoinGecko's independent estimate. It's not a specific line item from Coinbase's filings. Treat it as an estimate. Not a confirmed balance.
@TedPillows got the headline wrong. The underlying question? Still worth asking. Holding ETH and holding enough ETH aren't the same thing. Coinbase's Ethereum-adjacent revenue is real. Base network fees. Staking yield. Spot trading volume. They're meaningful portions of the business. Whether the treasury reflects that exposure proportionally—that's unanswered. Coinbase hasn't addressed it publicly with named executive commentary.
That gap matters. Corporate treasury decisions are read as conviction signals. Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, spent years making the case for Bitcoin as a reserve asset. The ETH version of that thesis is gaining ground. Bitmine recently lifted its Ethereum treasury to approximately 5.28 million ETH. Total holdings crossed $12 billion, according to The Block. That's the scale some holders are committing to.
Coinbase holds ETH. Confirmed. The sharper question is how much—and why that number relative to its Ethereum dependence. The viral post was factually wrong. The tension it pointed to is real. A disclosures page isn't a full answer.

Coinbase Does Hold ETH. The Bigger Question Remains.

Coinbase does hold ETH—their disclosures confirm it. But does their treasury reflect their Ethereum dependence? The harder question stays unanswered.
