ARK Invest published its <a href="https://www.ark-invest.com/crypto-reports/defi-quarterly-q2-2026" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Q2 2026 DeFi Quarterly report</a> in June. The numbers aren&#x27;t pretty. Total value locked across DeFi fell 22% quarter-over-quarter. Application-layer revenue dropped approximately 37% over the same period. Revenue fell faster than TVL. That gap matters. It means fee-generating activity — trading, borrowing, lending — contracted harder than the capital sitting in protocols. Users went quiet before they went home.

Not everything fell. Base stood out. Coinbase&#x27;s layer-2 saw stablecoin volume more than double during the quarter. Ethereum and Solana? Both declined. ARK flags Base and Ethereum as infrastructure layers with notable on-chain activity. Worth watching given the broader slowdown.
Active stablecoin addresses hit approximately 51 million near quarter-end. Even in a down market, stablecoin usage held a meaningful base.
ARK&#x27;s quarterly cadence makes direct Q1-to-Q2 comparison straightforward. Q1 also showed contraction in DeFi prices and TVL. The firm&#x27;s been one of the more consistent institutional voices in structured DeFi research.
Base&#x27;s stablecoin surge is the forward-looking data point here. One layer growing while aggregates fall is a signal. Durable migration or short-term shift? Q3 2026 will answer that.
