The AI-driven stock rally just lost steam. Markets hit repeated records. Now they're pulling back. A broad bond selloff sent Treasury yields higher. Equity futures dropped hard, according to Bloomberg.
Nasdaq 100 futures fell 1.4%. S&P 500 futures dropped 0.9%. That signals a weak finish to the week. Inflation worries are back. Geopolitical uncertainty is back. Investors are refocusing on macroeconomic risks. AI enthusiasm isn't enough anymore.
This marks a real shift. Chipmakers and AI-linked shares had carried the market. They'd shrugged off climbing Treasury yields. That narrow leadership now faces a stress test. Rising borrowing costs threaten valuations. High-growth tech names powered the broader advance. Now they're vulnerable.
Rising bond yields reflect persistent concern. Inflation may remain sticky. That dims hopes for near-term Federal Reserve rate cuts. "The base case remains that the Fed will cut rates, but perhaps not until the fourth quarter," a portfolio manager told Bloomberg. Monetary easing expectations just got pushed back. Many investors had anticipated cuts earlier in the year.
Geopolitical tensions added pressure. The US and Iran haven't reached an agreement. The Strait of Hormuz remains a risk. Energy and geopolitical uncertainty stay unresolved, as reported by Bloomberg. That compounds the challenge. Equities are already stretched. Valuations are elevated. Leadership is concentrated.
Markets may be entering a more fragile phase. The S&P 500's rally relied heavily on a handful of AI-linked companies. There's little room for error. Macro conditions could deteriorate. Higher yields make future earnings less valuable in present terms. That's a particular burden for growth stocks. They're trading at premium multiples on the promise of distant profits.
Investors now face harder questions. Can excitement over AI sustain market gains? Borrowing costs are rising. Inflation is sticky. Federal Reserve policy timing is uncertain. Geopolitical shocks keep coming. Treasury yields might remain elevated. The narrow tech-led rally could struggle to lift the wider market. That tests whether AI enthusiasm alone can overcome traditional financial headwinds.
The shift happened fast. Record highs to futures declines in days. That underscores how quickly sentiment can turn. Macroeconomic realities just intruded on a momentum-driven advance.
