Something strange is happening in global finance—and no, it’s not just gold mooning again.



Governments and institutions don’t want U.S. Treasuries anymore. China is offloading them. Japan’s appetite is waning. Even the Fed is stuck buying its own debt. The result? That capital has to go somewhere. A lot of it is flowing into gold. But gold can’t buy you groceries—or send money to your family overseas.



That’s where stablecoins come in.



Specifically, <a href="https://www.thecoinzone.com/news/tether-launches-usat-stablecoin-american-market/" data-wpil-monitor-id="1724">Tether (USDT) has emerged</a> as the dominant force in global dollar-denominated transactions. And it’s not just crypto bros swapping tokens on exchanges. It’s ordinary people—merchants, freelancers, migrants—using stablecoins as functional dollars. In Nigeria. In Turkey. In Argentina. In Ukraine. Everywhere the dollar is needed but banks are broken.



USDT is succeeding where banks and Western institutions have failed: <a href="https://www.thecoinzone.com/news/bank-of-italy-digital-bank-money-push/" data-wpil-monitor-id="1785">delivering dollar liquidity quickly</a>, cheaply, and without gatekeepers.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Big Is Tether&#x27;s Treasury Position? (The Numbers)</h2>



Before getting into why this matters, here is the scale.



Tether&#x27;s June 2026 attestation, prepared by BDO, shows $114.96 billion in U.S. Treasury bills plus $18.63 billion in overnight reverse repurchase agreements. That is roughly $133.6 billion in Treasury-linked exposure backing $184.6 billion in circulating USDT. Circle adds a further $67.6 billion, bringing the combined total to approximately $201 billion.



To put that in perspective: Tether alone holds more U.S. government debt than most sovereign nations, and its CEO now routinely describes the company as one of the largest private buyers of Treasuries in the world.



The transparency picture has also changed. In August 2026, KPMG completed a full independent audit of Tether&#x27;s 2025 financial statements, the first at this scale for the company. It confirmed reserves exceeded liabilities by $6.81 billion as of December 31, 2025. That is a backward-looking figure, and the June 2026 attestation has since put the excess cushion at $4.11 billion, roughly half where it stood three months earlier.

Two things about these numbers matter more than their size.



The first is composition. Roughly $24.6 billion of Tether&#x27;s reserves sit in gold and bitcoin, both of which the GENIUS Act explicitly excludes from eligible stablecoin backing. Circle&#x27;s reserves, held through a BlackRock-managed money market fund, already met the standard before it existed. Same asset class on the surface, materially different regulatory position underneath.



The second is timing. This growth happened precisely as foreign governments were trimming their own Treasury exposure. Private stablecoin issuers have quietly become a structural source of demand for short-dated U.S. government debt, which means stablecoin redemption pressure is now a variable in the Treasury market rather than a crypto-only concern.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading tablecontent">SWIFT Is Dying—And Stablecoins Are the Reason</h3>



For decades, the global financial system ran on the SWIFT rails. Slow, expensive, and layered with middlemen clipping fees. Even today, legacy banks like Barclays happily take a cut—just for routing money between two other banks.



That grift is on its way out.

For years, USDT operated outside U.S. regulatory structures. That created a persistent trust gap — especially for institutions. In January 2026, Tether moved to close it.



USA₮ is a new Tether product: federally regulated, dollar-backed, and designed from the ground up to operate inside the GENIUS Act framework. It is not a replacement for USDT. Think of it as a separate product for a separate audience — U.S. institutions and regulated entities that cannot touch an offshore-issued token.

The split matters because it signals something. Tether is not choosing between the offshore world and the U.S. system. It is building infrastructure for both. That is either a sign of genuine regulatory maturity or the most ambitious regulatory arbitrage play in financial history. Possibly both.

Here’s where we need to look at the geopolitical angle.



As the U.S. increasingly weaponizes the dollar through sanctions and trade restrictions, countries that refuse to toe Washington’s line are being forced to rethink their dependence. The numbers tell the story. As of June 2026, Tether and Circle together held roughly $201.6 billion in Treasury-linked reserves, backing about 256.9 billion tokens in circulation. The FSOC flagged the same dynamic from the other direction: if a large stablecoin faces a run, a forced sale of Treasury holdings could ripple through sovereign debt markets. That is how you know the scale has become real. Regulators are no longer worried about whether stablecoins matter. They are worried about what happens when they wobble.



For ordinary users in high-inflation economies, none of that systemic debate changes the daily reality. A merchant in Lagos or a freelancer in Buenos Aires is not reading FSOC reports. They are using USDT because it holds value and moves fast. That gap — between macro risk framing and ground-level utility — is exactly where stablecoins have carved out their position.
