<p>Chainalysis estimates that suspected wash trading across multiple blockchains reached $2.57 billion in 2024. The average controller address behind that activity moved about $3.66 million in wash-traded volume. These are not small-time actors running bots for fun.</p>



<p>On prediction markets, the numbers are sharper. Columbia Business School researchers analyzing Polymarket found that suspected wash trading hit nearly 60% of weekly volume at its December 2024 peak. Network-based detection methods — which trace wallet relationships rather than just price patterns — identified clusters of addresses cycling funds to inflate apparent activity.</p>



<p>The SEC has weighed in from a data-quality angle. Its aggregated crypto market data analysis notes that reported volumes across exchanges may significantly misrepresent actual liquidity, and that the concentration of real activity in the top 10 exchanges makes the rest of the market especially vulnerable to distortion.</p>
