Erigon is an open-source, high-performance Ethereum execution client written in Go. It started life as a fork of Geth called TurboGeth, then became Erigon, and is now maintained by Erigon Technologies as an independent company.

What makes it different from a standard Geth node? Storage. An Erigon archive node uses roughly 80% less disk space than an equivalent Geth archive node, which makes it practical to run on commodity hardware that would otherwise be too small.

The v3.x release line took that further. Erigon now ships with Caplin, an embedded consensus layer, meaning you can run both the execution and consensus sides of an Ethereum node from a single binary. You can still pair it with an external consensus client if you prefer a modular setup.

Erigon is listed as one of the major Ethereum execution clients on the official Ethereum.org nodes and clients page, alongside Geth, Nethermind, and Besu.

Erigon vs Geth: Which Should You Run?

Most Ethereum node operators start with Geth because it is the most widely used client. Erigon targets a specific profile: operators who need archive data, lean storage, or a single-binary setup. Here is how they compare on the metrics that matter.

👉 Quick takeaway: The headline difference is disk. Erigon runs an archive node in roughly 2 TB against Geth's ~13 TB, which changes what hardware you need to participate. Erigon also bundles a consensus layer and defaults to archive mode. Geth remains the more widely deployed general-purpose client with the broadest tooling support.

How to choose: If you need full historical query access or run an RPC endpoint, Erigon's archive-by-default setup saves significant storage cost. If you are a solo staker running a standard validator and want the most battle-tested client, Geth remains the most common choice. If client diversity matters to you (and it should for network health), running Erigon contributes to a more resilient Ethereum network.

How Does Erigon Work?

Erigon is an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) client, the runtime environment for smart contracts in the Ethereum ecosystem. The EVM is a virtual machine that executes smart contracts on the Ethereum network. Erigon improves upon the EVM by introducing several optimizations, such as faster block processing, efficient storage usage, and optimized code execution.

Erigon also utilizes a pruning mechanism that removes old and unnecessary data from the blockchain, reducing the storage space required to run the node. This optimization improves the synchronization process, making it faster and more efficient.

What is an Erigon Node?

Erigon is an Ethereum execution client. That means it handles the transaction execution and state management side of the Ethereum node, while a separate consensus client (or Erigon's own embedded Caplin) handles block production and finality.

Three architectural choices set Erigon apart from standard clients.

First, storage layout. Erigon uses a flat database model rather than a Merkle-trie-heavy approach, which dramatically reduces the amount of data written to disk. This is why archive storage comes in around 2 TB instead of 13 TB on Geth.

Second, embedded consensus. Since the v3.x line, Erigon ships Caplin as a built-in consensus layer. Operators who want simplicity can run one binary. Those who want modularity can still connect an external consensus client such as Lighthouse or Prysm.

Third, staged sync. Erigon downloads and processes blockchain history in discrete pipeline stages rather than all at once. Each stage can be re-run independently, which makes recovery from interruptions faster and makes the sync process more predictable on commodity hardware.

The v3.4 release, published April 2026, focused on production stability improvements and expanded operator tooling for RPC providers and validators. v3.5.4 followed in July 2026 with continued stability and feature updates.

What is an Erigon Archive Node?

An Erigon archive node is a type of software node that runs on the Ethereum network. It is designed to store a complete copy of the entire Ethereum blockchain, including all historical transactions and smart contract code.

This type of node is useful for developers and researchers who need to access historical data from the Ethereum network, as it provides a way to search and analyze the entire history of the network. Archive nodes are also important for ensuring the security and integrity of the network, as they provide redundancy and backup for the blockchain data.

The official Erigon repository has moved to github.com/erigontech/erigon. That is where you will find the latest releases, including the v3.5.x line.

Benefits of Erigon

Why operators choose Erigon in 2026 comes down to four concrete advantages.

Storage efficiency. An Erigon archive node uses roughly 80% less disk space than a comparable Geth archive node. For RPC providers running multiple nodes, that difference translates directly into infrastructure cost savings.

Single-binary simplicity. The embedded Caplin consensus layer means you can run a complete Ethereum node (execution plus consensus) from one binary. Fewer moving parts mean fewer points of failure for validators and node operators.

L2 and multi-chain reach. Erigon Nitro powers EVM execution on Arbitrum, and integration work for Arbitrum Sepolia is active. This makes Erigon relevant beyond Ethereum mainnet.

ZK readiness. The Zilkworm project and historical proofs indexing work, active through 2025 and 2026, are building toward stateless client support and ZK-verification in the execution layer. This positions Erigon for the next generation of Ethereum scaling.

What is Caplin? Erigon's Embedded Consensus Layer

Since Ethereum's move to proof-of-stake, every full node needs two components: an execution client (which processes transactions and runs smart contracts) and a consensus client (which handles block proposals and finality).

Most operators run these as separate binaries, for example Geth paired with Lighthouse. Erigon took a different approach. Starting with the v3.x line, Erigon ships Caplin as a built-in consensus layer. One binary. One process to manage.

You are not locked in. If you want to run Erigon as the execution layer alongside an external consensus client like Prysm or Teku, that still works. Caplin is the default for operators who prefer simplicity.

Why does this matter for validators? Fewer dependencies mean fewer upgrade coordination problems. When Erigon releases an update, the execution and consensus components are tested together, which reduces the risk of a version mismatch taking your validator offline.

Erigon and the L2 Ecosystem: Arbitrum and Beyond

Erigon is not just an Ethereum mainnet client anymore. The Erigon Nitro fork powers EVM execution within the Arbitrum stack, and work on Arbitrum Sepolia integration has been active through 2025 and 2026.

What does that mean in practice? Layer 2 networks built on Arbitrum can use Erigon as their execution engine, inheriting its storage efficiency and performance characteristics. For teams building or operating Arbitrum-based chains, this opens a path to leaner infrastructure.

Beyond Arbitrum, Erigon's blog and changelog reference ongoing ecosystem collaborations and ZK-related integration work (Zilkworm) that extend its relevance into the broader multi-chain landscape. The Glamsterdam-era hardfork readiness work documented in 2026 release notes signals that Erigon is tracking Ethereum's protocol roadmap closely.

Erigon's ZK Roadmap: What Is Zilkworm?

Zero-knowledge proofs are one of the most active areas of Ethereum research. Erigon is building toward this future through a project called Zilkworm.

The goal is stateless client support: the ability to verify Ethereum state without storing the full history locally. Erigon has been building out historical proofs indexing and a data model that can generate and serve the proof data ZK-verification workflows need.

This work was active and documented throughout 2025 and 2026. It is not a production feature yet, but it signals where Erigon is heading. For developers building ZK-native applications or evaluating which execution client will be most compatible with future Ethereum scaling, this is worth tracking.

Follow the Erigon blog for updates on Zilkworm and related ZK integration work.

Should You Run Erigon? A Quick Decision Guide

Not every operator needs Erigon. Here is a direct breakdown.

Run Erigon if:

You need an archive node and want to avoid 10+ TB of storage. Erigon's archive footprint is roughly 80% smaller than Geth's.

You run an RPC endpoint and need full historical query access with lean infrastructure.

You want a single binary that handles both execution and consensus (Caplin).

You are building or operating an Arbitrum-based L2 chain.

You want to support Ethereum client diversity. Erigon is one of the minority clients, and running it strengthens network resilience.

Stick with Geth or another client if:

You are a solo home staker who wants the most widely tested, community-supported client.

You do not need archive data and are running a standard pruned full node.

You want the largest pool of community tutorials and troubleshooting resources.

Hardware note: Erigon 3.x is designed to sync on commodity hardware with a fast SSD. Check the official Erigon documentation for current recommended specifications before you provision hardware, as requirements change with chain growth.
