Released in 2017 as a layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum, Polygon has its own approach to cracking down on high transaction fees.

This aims to make the network a better fit for microtransactions. But that's not the full story.

In this article, we're reviewing everything you need to know about gas fees on the Polygon network.

What Are Gas Fees?

Gas fees are payments one must make when sending funds over a blockchain network. These fees are paid out as a reward to node operators for validating transactions.

For most decentralized blockchains, these fees are a way to maintain the system's security; they let people conduct activities like buying tokens and interacting with smart contracts without requiring middlemen to facilitate the transactions.

Polygon is no exception.

To send a transaction on Polygon, you pay gas fees in POL, the network's native token. POL replaced MATIC as the gas and staking token following Polygon's official migration. If you still hold MATIC, it can be migrated to POL at a 1:1 ratio through Polygon's migration tools.

How Polygon Gas Fees Are Calculated

Polygon gas fees follow the EIP-1559 model. Every transaction has two components: a baseFee and a maxPriorityFee.

The baseFee is set by the network and burned automatically. You cannot change it. The maxPriorityFee is a tip you set to incentivize validators to include your transaction faster.

Your wallet submits a maxFeePerGas ceiling. If the actual baseFee is lower than your ceiling, you get the difference refunded. That makes cost estimation much more predictable than the old single-price model.

Polygon Gas Station V2 publishes three live tiers at any moment. Here is what those tiers look like in practice, using example values from Polygon's official EIP-1559 documentation:

👉 Quick takeaway: The fast tier targets next-block inclusion at a higher fee ceiling. Standard settles within a few blocks at a moderate cost. Slow is the cheapest option but offers no guaranteed inclusion window — suitable only for non-time-sensitive transactions.

          🏆 Fastest inclusion available

The estimatedBaseFee in those examples sits around 275 gWei. Polygon produces a new block roughly every 6 seconds, so even the Slow tier rarely takes more than a minute.

For a standard token transfer (21,000 gas units) at the Standard tier, the fee works out to roughly 0.0000091 POL — well under a tenth of a cent at most POL price points. That is why Polygon is popular for microtransactions.

Polygon Gas Station V2 also enforces a minimum priority fee of 25 gWei on mainnet. Setting a lower tip will get your transaction rejected, not just delayed.

Three trackers give you live POL fee data with slightly different interfaces:

PolygonScan Gas Tracker. The closest thing to an official source. Shows Slow, Standard, and Fast tiers in gWei, updated block by block.

Polygon POS Scan Gas Price Tracker. Updated as of March 2025, this tracker adds historical charts so you can spot low-fee windows. Fees are displayed in POL.

Blocknative. Shows POL gas fees alongside a transaction success probability score. Useful if you are submitting a time-sensitive transaction and want a second opinion on your tier choice.

BitBond also offers a Polygon tracker with USD conversion, which is handy if you want to see the cost in fiat without doing the math yourself.

Which Gas Tier Should You Pick?

Picking the wrong tier costs you either time or money. Here is a simple decision framework.

Pick Slow if: you are not in a hurry, the network is quiet, and you want to pay the absolute minimum. Good for non-urgent token transfers during off-peak hours.

Pick Standard if: you want your transaction confirmed within a minute or two. This is the right default for most DeFi interactions and NFT purchases.

Pick Fast if: you are competing with other users for a limited slot — for example, minting a high-demand NFT, executing an arbitrage trade, or sending a time-sensitive swap.

One rule applies to all three: never set your maxPriorityFee below 25 gWei. Polygon Gas Station V2 will reject the transaction outright.

If you are unsure, check the live tiers on Polygon Gas Station or Polygon POS Scan before submitting. Both update in real time.

MATIC vs POL: What Changed for Gas Fees?

Polygon migrated its native token from MATIC to POL. If you used Polygon before the migration, here is what that means for you.

Gas fees are now paid in POL. Any wallet or dApp that still labels fees as MATIC is displaying outdated information. The token itself migrated at a 1:1 ratio, so your balance did not change in size.

The baseFee on every transaction is burned in POL. That means POL supply decreases with network activity, changing the token's long-term economics compared to the old MATIC model.

For staking, validators now earn POL rewards rather than MATIC. This affects yield calculations if you are running or delegating to a validator node.

If you still hold unmigrated MATIC, check Polygon's official migration tools. The 1:1 swap is supported through the official bridge.

Paying Gas Fees With the Polygon Faucet

If you're developing a smart contract on Polygon, you'll likely want to test it out before its deployed. But that can result in significant gas costs. Luckily, you can obtain free test MATIC tokens through what's known as a faucet.

Faucets are tools that give you access to a small amount of tokens at no cost. Some of the most popular Polygon faucets include:

Polygon Faucet. This native faucet, provided by Polygon and its key partners like Alchemy, QuickNode, and GetBlock, allows developers to obtain test MATIC/ETH tokens on the PoS Amoy, zkEVM Cardano, and Ethereum Sepolia testnets. The service requires connecting via Discord and joining Polygon’s Discord community.

Stakely. This service offers a user-friendly interface for requesting test tokens. Verify current requirements on their site before using, as social-sharing requirements for faucets change frequently.

Chaindrop. This platform aggregates faucets across multiple networks. Note: the URL in the original article points to the Mumbai testnet (chainid=80001), which has been deprecated. Check the current Chaindrop site for the active Polygon testnet chainid before using.

With these faucets, it's only possible to get free tokens if your wallet has a zero balance. This helps prevent faucets from being misused as a way to generate profit.

Polygon Bridge Gas Fees

Bridging from Polygon back to Ethereum is where costs jump. The gas fees on Polygon's side remain cheap — fractions of a cent. The Ethereum side is a different story. Ethereum gas fees can run from a few dollars to tens of dollars depending on network congestion at the time you withdraw.

Three factors determine what you pay: the Ethereum baseFee at the moment of withdrawal, the bridge protocol's own fee, and the token type (ERC-20 transfers cost more gas than plain ETH transfers).

For most users, timing the withdrawal during low Ethereum congestion (historically weekday early mornings UTC) cuts the Ethereum-side fee significantly.

Polygon’s native bridge is the primary tool for performing this task. But there are also some third-party solutions that you might be able to use to access cheaper bridging fees. These include:

Umbria Narni Bridge.

Squid Router.

Orbit.Bridge.

Unlike Polygon's native bridge, these bridges also give you the ability to move your financial energy to other chains beyond Ethereum. However, your mileage may vary.

If you're looking to cut down on your gas fees, it's always a good idea to consider all of your options — including finding the best chain for your needs.

How to Estimate Your Gas Cost Before Sending

You do not need to guess. Follow these four steps.

Go to Polygon Gas Station or Polygon POS Scan and note the current Standard maxFee in gWei.

Find the gas limit for your transaction type. A simple token transfer uses 21,000 gas units. A smart contract interaction typically uses 50,000 to 200,000 gas units depending on complexity.

Multiply: gas units x maxFee (in gWei) x 0.000000001 = cost in POL.

Check the current POL price and multiply by your POL cost to get the USD equivalent.

Worked example using Standard tier values from Polygon's documentation:

21,000 gas units x 435 gWei x 0.000000001 = 0.0000091 POL

At a POL price of $0.40, that is roughly $0.0000037 — less than a hundredth of a cent.

For a complex DeFi interaction using 150,000 gas units at the same Standard tier:

150,000 x 435 x 0.000000001 = 0.00006525 POL

At $0.40 POL, that is about $0.000026 — still under a cent.

Polygon's fees are cheap enough that even heavy dApp users rarely spend more than a few cents per day on gas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the baseFee get burned on Polygon?

Yes. On Polygon Chain, the baseFee component of every transaction fee is burned in POL. This is part of the EIP-1559 model Polygon adopted.

What is the minimum priority fee on Polygon mainnet?

Polygon Gas Station V2 enforces a minimum maxPriorityFee of 25 gWei on Polygon Chain mainnet. Transactions submitted below this threshold will be rejected.

How often do Polygon gas fees update?

Polygon produces a block approximately every 6 seconds. Gas fee estimates from Polygon Gas Station and third-party trackers refresh at roughly the same cadence.

Can I still pay fees with MATIC?

No. Following the official migration, POL is the gas token on Polygon Chain. MATIC holders can migrate to POL at a 1:1 ratio using Polygon's migration tools.
