Block depth measures how many blocks have been added to the chain after the block containing your transaction. Each new block that lands on top adds one unit of depth. It is also called confirmation depth, and the two terms are interchangeable across most exchanges and block explorers.

The math is simple. Say your transaction lands in block 5,000. The chain is now at block 5,005. Your transaction has a block depth of 5. Every new block mined increases that number by one.

Depth is not the same as block height. Block height counts upward from the genesis block to the current tip. Block depth counts backward from the current tip to the block you care about. A transaction in block 5,000 on a chain at block 5,005 has a height of 5,000 and a depth of 5. Block explorers show both numbers, and mixing them up is a common source of confusion.

Why Do Multiple Block Confirmations Matter?

The more subsequent blocks get added on a blockchain without any issues, the more irrefutable transaction records become. More confirmations imply transaction finality and security against potential risks like:

Double-spend attacks: An attacker tries to replace part of the chain to erase a transaction they already spent, then spend the same funds again. At depth 1, this is a real threat on any chain. At depth 6 on Bitcoin, it requires controlling more than 50% of the network's hash rate for over an hour.

Short-range reorgs: An attacker secretly mines a competing chain from a recent block and releases it once it is longer than the public chain. Transactions in the orphaned blocks disappear from the record. Greater depth means the attacker must have mined more competing blocks in secret, which becomes prohibitively expensive quickly.

Long-range attacks: More relevant to proof-of-stake chains, where an attacker with old private keys tries to rewrite history from far back. Modern PoS protocols address this with slashing and checkpoint finality rather than confirmation depth alone.

Essentially, greater block depth cements the transaction's position in the blockchain beyond reasonable doubt in a probabilistic manner. It makes cost and effort required to maliciously alter that part of the chain's history near-impossible.

How Many Confirmations Are Sufficient?

So clearly, higher block depth directly correlates with assurance around that transaction's finality. But how many subsequent confirmations offer adequate security?

The answer varies by blockchain and depends on factors like:

Overall network size and distributed consensus protocols

Type of transactions - size, purpose (payments, smart contracts etc.)

Hacker incentives to attack that transaction

Acceptable probability of successful attack based on confirmations

There is no single correct answer. The right depth depends on the network, the value at stake, and who is receiving the funds. That said, current guidance clusters around a few practical benchmarks.

Bitcoin runs a block roughly every 10 minutes. Most exchanges accept a deposit after 3 confirmations, which represents about 30 minutes of elapsed time. For large transfers, many platforms wait for 6 confirmations (roughly 60 minutes) before crediting funds. The 3-to-6 range is a widely cited rule of thumb, not a protocol requirement.

Ethereum produces a block approximately every 12 seconds. Because blocks arrive much faster, the confirmation count needed to achieve comparable security is higher in raw block terms, though the elapsed time can be shorter. Finality on Ethereum post-Merge also involves a checkpoint mechanism that differs fundamentally from Bitcoin's probabilistic model.

Smaller or newer chains carry more reorg risk because fewer miners or validators are securing the network. Exchanges typically require more confirmations on these chains to compensate.

The speculative claim that confirmation requirements will drop as networks mature is not supported by current evidence and has been removed.

Network Confirmation Comparison

The table below shows how block depth requirements differ across major networks. Numbers reflect common exchange practice as of 2026, not protocol-level rules.

👉 Quick takeaway: Bitcoin requires 30-60 minutes to reach exchange thresholds due to its 10-minute block time. Ethereum is significantly faster at 2.5-13 minutes with checkpoint finality. Litecoin sits between the two. Smaller chains often require more confirmations despite faster blocks, reflecting lower network security.

3 Steps to Check Block Depth Right Now

You do not need any special tools. Every major blockchain has a free public block explorer.

Find your transaction hash. Your wallet or exchange confirmation email will include a transaction ID (TXID). Copy it.

Open a block explorer. For Bitcoin, go to blockstream.info. For Ethereum, use etherscan.io. Paste your TXID into the search bar.

Read the confirmation count. The explorer will show a field labeled 'Confirmations' or 'Block Confirmations.' That number is your current block depth. If it reads 0, the transaction is still in the mempool and has not been included in any block yet.

The confirmation count updates automatically as new blocks arrive. Refresh the page to see the latest depth. On Bitcoin, expect roughly one new confirmation every 10 minutes. On Ethereum, confirmations accumulate in seconds.

What Happens to Block Depth During a Reorg?

A blockchain reorganization, or reorg, occurs when the network discards a portion of the chain and replaces it with a longer competing chain. It happens naturally in proof-of-work networks when two miners find valid blocks at nearly the same time. The shorter chain gets orphaned.

For your transaction, a reorg can be jarring. If your transaction was in a block that gets orphaned, its depth resets. It may drop back to zero and re-enter the mempool, waiting to be included in the new canonical chain. It is not lost, but it is no longer confirmed.

This is exactly why depth matters. A transaction sitting at depth 1 is vulnerable to a single-block reorg. At depth 6 on Bitcoin, the probability of a natural reorg reaching that far back is extremely low. A deliberate 51% attack to reverse a transaction at depth 6 would require an attacker to control more than half of Bitcoin's total hash rate and sustain that advantage for over an hour.

Small chains with less hash rate or fewer validators are meaningfully more exposed. A reorg of 10 or 20 blocks has happened on smaller PoW networks. It is rare on Bitcoin and has not occurred beyond 1-2 blocks in recent years.

Probabilistic Finality vs. Protocol-Level Finality

Not all blockchains treat finality the same way. The distinction shapes how you should interpret block depth.

Bitcoin uses probabilistic finality. There is no single moment when a transaction is mathematically guaranteed to be permanent. Instead, each additional block makes reversal exponentially more expensive. At 6 confirmations, the cost of a successful attack exceeds any realistic profit motive for most transaction sizes. The transaction is final in practice, not by protocol rule.

Ethereum, after its 2022 transition to proof-of-stake, introduced checkpoint-based finality. Every 32 slots (roughly 6.4 minutes), the network reaches a checkpoint. Once a transaction's block is part of a finalized checkpoint, reversing it would require destroying at least one-third of all staked ETH. That is a different and stronger guarantee than Bitcoin's probabilistic model.

For users, the practical takeaway is this: waiting for 6 Bitcoin confirmations and waiting for Ethereum finality are not equivalent waits, and they do not carry equivalent security guarantees. Check which model the chain you are using follows before deciding how long to wait.

Key Questions Answered

What is block depth? The number of blocks added to the chain after the block containing your transaction. Each new block adds one confirmation.

How many confirmations do I need? On Bitcoin, 3 to 6 is the standard exchange range. On Ethereum, finality works differently. For smaller chains, expect higher requirements. See the comparison table above.

Where do I check it? Paste your transaction ID into a block explorer like blockstream.info (Bitcoin) or etherscan.io (Ethereum). The confirmation count shown is your current depth.

Can a confirmed transaction be reversed? At low depths, yes, through a reorg. At 6 Bitcoin confirmations, a reversal would require a sustained 51% attack. The risk is real at depth 1 and near-negligible at depth 6 on a major chain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is block depth the same as block height?

No. Block height measures the distance from the genesis block to the current tip of the chain. Block depth measures the distance from the current tip back to the block containing a specific transaction. They move in opposite directions.

Why do exchanges require different confirmation counts for different coins?

Each chain has a different block time, hash rate, and finality model. A 6-confirmation wait on Bitcoin takes about an hour and is considered very secure. Six confirmations on a small PoW chain with low hash rate might take the same time but offer far weaker security. Exchanges calibrate thresholds to their own risk tolerance and the cost of a successful attack.

Can I speed up my block depth?

No. Block depth increases automatically as miners or validators add new blocks to the chain. There is nothing a sender or receiver can do to accelerate it once the transaction is broadcast. Paying a higher transaction fee gets your transaction included in a block faster, which starts the depth clock sooner, but it does not change how fast blocks are produced after that.

What is a safe block depth for a large Bitcoin transfer?

Most exchanges use 6 confirmations as their upper threshold for Bitcoin deposits. For very large transfers, some platforms wait longer or apply manual review. Six confirmations on Bitcoin represents approximately 60 minutes of elapsed time and requires an attacker to outpace the entire network for that duration.
