Over the last few years, crypto has been cemented as one of the biggest underdog stories of our times.

Against all odds, it has become the best performing asset class.

But that doesn’t mean that you should sell all your stocks and line your pockets with crypto. After all, both traditional assets and digital assets have their own risks and rewards worth considering.

While this article does not provide financial advice, let’s take a look at what those risks and rewards actually are.

Does Bitcoin Have a Higher ROI Than Traditional Assets?

Back in 2014, the price of 1 BTC hovered around $300. Not a great year to be a Bitcoin holder. By 2024, that same coin was worth over $60,000. That is roughly a 20,000% return over a decade. Gold returned about 200% over the same period. The S&P 500 returned about 260%.

For context on how unusual that is: a 20,000% return means $1,000 became $200,000. No traditional asset class has come close to that over any comparable 10-year window.

The 2026 picture is more mixed. Crypto prices dropped roughly 36% in the first half of 2026, per Bitwise data. The long-run case for Bitcoin remains intact in institutional research — Fidelity Digital Assets published a full analysis in early 2026 titled 'Getting Off Zero' that argues Bitcoin's risk-adjusted metrics still justify a place in a long-term portfolio. But the short-run volatility is real, and the 20,000% figure is a rearview mirror number, not a forecast.

Bitcoin vs. Traditional Assets: Side-by-Side (2014-2026)

Numbers make the argument better than adjectives. Here is how the major asset classes stack up across two time horizons.

👉 Quick takeaway: Bitcoin's decade-long return dwarfs every other asset here, but the -36% drawdown in H1 2026 shows what that return costs in volatility. Crypto equities outperformed spot Bitcoin over the same period, which is a reminder that exposure route matters as much as asset choice. The S&P 500 and gold delivered far smaller decade returns with far smaller drawdowns.

The 10-year picture favors Bitcoin by a wide margin. The 2026 picture is more complicated. Spot crypto prices dropped sharply in H1 2026, while crypto equities outperformed almost every other major asset class. That split matters when you are deciding how to get exposure.

What $10,000 Invested in 2014 Looks Like Today

In Bitcoin: approximately $2,000,000 (based on ~$300 to ~$60,000+ price move)

In the S&P 500: approximately $36,000

In gold: approximately $30,000

Those figures are not financial advice. They are the historical record. The question is what the next decade looks like — and that is where the 2026 research gets interesting.

What Institutions Are Actually Buying in 2026

For years, Wall Street's official position on crypto ranged from skeptical to hostile. That is no longer the case.

BlackRock updated its Bitcoin analysis in August 2026. Its conclusion: a 1-2% allocation to Bitcoin in a traditional 60/40 portfolio could improve risk-adjusted returns over a 10-year horizon. That is not a speculative retail take. That is the world's largest asset manager putting a number on it.

Fidelity Digital Assets published its own 2026 update, titled 'Getting Off Zero.' The core argument is that Bitcoin's long-run risk-adjusted metrics now justify treating it as a legitimate investable asset class alongside stocks and bonds.

Meanwhile, Axios reported in mid-2026 that banks and traditional financial firms are actively expanding their crypto offerings — not reluctantly, but as a competitive priority.

The Bitwise/VettaFi 2026 Benchmark Survey found that 15% of financial advisors expect crypto to be the best-performing asset class in 2026, ranking it second only to equities (38%). A year ago, that figure would have been unthinkable in mainstream advisor circles.

JPMorgan's Bitcoin ETF position — which this article previously noted — is now one data point in a much larger institutional picture. The shift is structural, not a one-off.

How Much Should You Actually Hold? A Simple Framework

BlackRock's answer is 1-2%. That is a reasonable starting point for anyone who wants Bitcoin exposure without letting it dominate their portfolio.

Here is a practical way to think about allocation based on your risk tolerance:

👉 Quick takeaway: BlackRock's risk-adjusted work lands at 1-3% for a moderate portfolio, which is far below what most crypto-native investors hold. The higher tiers are not wrong, but they demand something specific: the ability to watch 30-50% of that allocation disappear without changing your plan. Pick the tier you can hold through a drawdown, not the one that looks best in a bull market.

          ⚠️ 5-10%

A quick example. On a $50,000 portfolio:

1% allocation = $500 in Bitcoin

3% allocation = $1,500 in Bitcoin

10% allocation = $5,000 in Bitcoin

The 2026 data is a useful reminder of why sizing matters. Spot crypto fell ~36% in H1 2026. A 1% Bitcoin position losing 36% costs you $180 on a $50,000 portfolio. A 10% position losing 36% costs you $1,800. Same percentage loss. Very different dollar impact.

This is not financial advice. It is arithmetic. Run the numbers for your own situation before deciding.

Crypto vs. TradFi: What Are the Risks?

The returns make a strong case. The risks are also real and specific. Digital assets are not 'quite risky' in a vague sense — they carry documented drawdown risk (Bitcoin has dropped 50-80% in past bear markets), smart contract vulnerabilities, custody risk if you hold your own keys, and regulatory uncertainty that varies by country. Knowing the specific risk is more useful than knowing the general category.

Scams and fraud

Crypto's early years were rough. Exit scams, Ponzi schemes, and outright fraud were common partly because regulation was thin. That has changed. Most major markets now have clearer regulatory frameworks, and institutional custody standards have improved sharply.

TradFi is not clean either. Enron, Theranos, the Wells Fargo cross-selling scandal, and Bernie Madoff are reminders that regulation does not eliminate fraud. It just changes its shape.

Volatility

Bitcoin's volatility is real and well-documented. In 2017, it ran from $1,000 to $20,000 and then fell back to $8,000 in about six weeks. In H1 2026, spot crypto prices dropped roughly 36%. If that kind of drawdown would force you to sell, the position size is too large.

Traditional assets have their own volatility stories: GameStop ran from $10 to over $500 in a month in early 2021. Tesla went from $85 to over $700 in 2020. Volatility is not unique to crypto. It is a feature of any high-growth asset.

Security: Crypto vs. TradFi

Crypto hacks are a real risk. In 2022, $3.8 billion was stolen across the ecosystem. TradFi faces a different threat: data breaches. The 2017 Equifax breach hit 148 million people. In 2024 alone, more than 35.9 billion records were exposed across over 9,478 publicly disclosed incidents. Neither system is perfectly safe. The risks are just different in character.

Even TradFi is Getting Behind Crypto

Crypto has been called just about every name in the book by some of TradFi’s giants. For example, who can forget when JPMorgan’s CEO Jamie Dimon called Bitcoin “a fraud” with “no hope.”

Fast forward to today, and those same giants have had no choice but to seek their own profits in crypto. JPMorgan's Bitcoin ETF position — reported at around $760,000 in disclosed holdings at the time of writing — is now one of the smaller institutional disclosures. By mid-2026, banks and traditional financial firms were expanding crypto offerings as a competitive priority, not a reluctant concession. Axios reported in June 2026 that Wall Street's embrace of crypto had become broad and structural across multiple major institutions.

One thing is clear: crypto has outperformed nearly every expectation placed on it since Bitcoin launched in 2009. The argument is no longer whether it deserves to be taken seriously. The argument now is how much exposure makes sense, and in what form. That is a very different conversation than the one happening five years ago.

The Next Frontier: Tokenized Real-World Assets

Bitcoin is not the only story in the crypto asset class conversation. Tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) are growing fast and adding a new dimension to what 'investing in crypto' actually means.

Tokenized RWAs are blockchain-based representations of traditional assets: real estate, government bonds, commodities, even gold. CoinGecko's 2026 RWA report found that tokenized RWAs grew from roughly 2.7% of the stablecoin market's size at the start of 2025 to about 6.4% by 2026. That is more than a doubling in relative scale inside 18 months.

Why does this matter? Because it blurs the line between crypto and traditional investing. You can now hold tokenized gold on a blockchain. You can hold tokenized Treasury bonds. The asset is traditional; the infrastructure is crypto-native.

For investors who want crypto's efficiency and programmability without Bitcoin's volatility, tokenized RWAs are worth watching. They are not yet a mainstream retail product, but institutional interest is accelerating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is crypto still the best-performing asset class?

Over a 10-year horizon ending in 2024, yes — Bitcoin's ~20,000% return from 2014 dwarfs every traditional asset class. Over shorter windows like H1 2026, spot crypto underperformed most major asset classes. The answer depends entirely on which time period you measure.

What allocation to Bitcoin do major institutions recommend?

BlackRock's August 2026 analysis suggests 1-2% in a traditional 60/40 portfolio could improve risk-adjusted returns. Fidelity Digital Assets argues any allocation above zero is worth considering given Bitcoin's long-run metrics. Neither is a blanket endorsement of large positions.

Are crypto equities different from holding Bitcoin directly?

Yes. In H1 2026, spot crypto prices fell roughly 36% while crypto equities returned approximately 23%. Holding shares in companies like Coinbase or MicroStrategy gives you indirect exposure to crypto's growth without the custody risk of holding tokens directly — but it also adds company-specific risk.

What are tokenized real-world assets and why do they matter?

Tokenized RWAs are blockchain-based versions of traditional assets: bonds, real estate, gold. They grew from 2.7% to 6.4% of the stablecoin market's relative size between early 2025 and 2026. For investors who want crypto infrastructure without Bitcoin's volatility, this is the emerging middle ground.
