Have you ever wondered where all blockchain data is actually stored? From the first pizzas bought with Bitcoin to the latest NFT scam, someone’s carrying all that data to this day. The more blocks, the more secure. But is there a limit?

Is it the answer to delete blockchain data for extra space, or is there a better solution to storage?

Storage Coins at a Glance

Five networks dominate the decentralized storage space. Each uses a different model, token, and fee structure.

👉 Quick takeaway: Arweave is the only network in this group with one-time payment for permanent storage, which makes it the default for NFT metadata and archival data. Filecoin handles enterprise-scale deals with proof-of-storage guarantees. Storj simplified its pricing to a per-GB model in July 2026. Siacoin serves budget and privacy-focused users, while TON Storage is purpose-built for the TON ecosystem.

The Blockchain Storage Problem: Is It Too Late?

The largest public blockchains have sort of become a mixed bag of junk data. There are thousands of transaction blocks with little to no purpose other than allowing the secure validation of new ones. And it’s going to get worse once true mass adoption occurs.

One reason we can’t just delete the data is that transparency and preservation are important values for the crypto community. Even if you only keep the “important” blocks, it’s only a matter of time before you run into storage problems again.

This also debunks the ownership concept surrounding non-fungible tokens (NFTs). We assume these collections will exist forever. Well, if someone deletes the block or the blockchain paralyzes (like BnB did), they no longer exist.

Not to mention that the front end part of DeFi platforms is stored in centralized servers. Anytime, any provider could take down websites or manipulate/delete NFTs (e.g., the NFT you own redirects to a 404 not-found page). Digital assets shouldn’t be this fragile.

One reason blockchains don’t decentralize the entire Internet stack is storage. It takes 4-8 GB RAM and 2 TB SSD to run a full node on Ethereum, and the increased data will increase the requirements. Whether it’s because of cost or people being too lazy to buy equipment, Ethereum doesn’t have enough nodes for the volume it receives: about 10,000.

This tendency is called centralization, the opposite of why blockchain was invented.

How Blockchain Storage Works

There are two parts of the blockchain storage problem:

There’s more and more data every time and fewer nodes who have enough hardware capacity.
Blockchain can’t preserve its decentralization because the infrastructure layer not always is (AKA layer-0).

To understand why there’s no obvious solution, here’s how storage works.

Blockchain is essentially a shared database that records transaction information. When you store a copy of all blockchain data, you become a full node. Because there are many nodes with the same copy, no one can simply manipulate or delete this data.

Full nodes update the database following a consensus mechanism. Every new block adds to the storage needed, which starts from the first-ever transaction. One solution is to partition the chain (AKA sharding), but in practice no one has done it yet in 2023.

Simply put, more storage means fewer full nodes, more centralization, and lower security.

The second part is, we need web infrastructure to access blockchain. Both blockchain and the Internet are decentralized, but the way the latter is managed isn’t. There are entire crypto exchanges stored in servers, as well as NFTs and custodial-wallets.

The giant tech companies could disrupt the off-chain side of crypto platforms. DeFi dApps would still function but with lower volume and more token volatility. Internet infrastructure is a bottleneck for crypto adoption, although it can too be decentralized.

Examples Of Blockchain Storage Projects

Thankfully, the blockchain storage problem is nothing new for developers. That’s why many have already spent years building systems to distribute storage. Not only are they available, but many have ranked within the top 100 cryptocurrencies for years.

InterPlanetary File System (IPFS)

IPFS is a peer-to-peer storing system with broader applications than the typical public blockchain. Its vision is to “preserve and grow humanity’s knowledge” with a resilient, open web. It’s strictly a file network, although projects like Filecoin use this infrastructure to monetize storage.

Any peer can upload information (e.g., websites), and whenever someone wants to access it, IPFS distributes that file from the nearest available peer. The more users access it, the faster and safer it is distributed. Files remain available as long as there’s one node and it doesn’t delete it (AKA garbage collection).

For example, if someone takes down Wikipedia, the IPFS link will still work. This preservation property partially contributed to the rise of NFTs. You can’t keep ownership of anything stored on centralized servers.

Filecoin (FIL)

Filecoin is a blockchain with an incentive layer for decentralized storage. Users pay FIL tokens to upload, store, or retrieve data from a global network of storage providers. Anyone with an Internet connection and spare disk space can earn fees by offering that space to the open market.

Providers stake FIL and continuously submit cryptographic proofs of stored data. Miss a proof window and the stake gets slashed. That mechanism is what stops providers from taking payment and deleting files.

Filecoin and IPFS are both created by Protocol Labs, though they operate as independent projects.

The bigger story in 2026 is Filecoin Onchain Cloud, which went live on mainnet in early 2026. It turns Filecoin from a storage marketplace into a programmable cloud layer. Developers can now access on-chain APIs for decentralized AI endpoints, NFT metadata feeds, and verifiable delivery proofs. Storage deals come with on-chain receipts confirming data was actually delivered, not just promised. That verification step is what separates it from earlier storage-only models.

Storj (STORJ)

Storj runs on Ethereum as an ERC-20 token and powers a decentralized cloud storage network. Users pay in STORJ to store data across a distributed network of node operators. Use cases include cloud-native app storage, backups, video, and media streaming.

Node operators earn STORJ by contributing disk space and bandwidth. As of July 1, 2026, Storj introduced a simplified pricing model for its DCS object storage service. The update adjusted minimum monthly fees and per-GB rates, which affects both what users pay and what operators take home. Operators should check the current Storj DCS pricing page for the latest figures.

The STORJ ERC-20 token launched in 2017 with approximately 50 million tokens at around $0.90 each.

Arweave (AR)

Arweave takes a fundamentally different approach. You pay once and the data is stored permanently. There are no monthly fees and no renewal reminders. The one-time payment funds an endowment that generates returns to pay storage providers indefinitely.

That model makes Arweave the default choice for permanent archiving: NFT metadata, Web3 front-ends, legal records, and anything that needs to exist decades from now. The trade-off is that you pay a higher upfront cost relative to a month of Filecoin or Storj storage. Arweave is not ideal for data you plan to update or delete.

TON Storage

TON Storage is the decentralized storage layer built into the TON blockchain, the network originally developed by Telegram. Files are stored on-chain within the TON ecosystem, making it a natural fit for Telegram-linked applications and TON-based dApps.

Node operators participate using the TON token. Because TON Storage is native to the TON chain, it integrates directly with TON smart contracts without relying on a separate storage token or cross-chain bridge.

The Graph (GRT)

The Graph is an indexing protocol rather than a storage network. It allows developers to query blockchain data efficiently using a structure of indexers, curators, and delegators who are incentivized with GRT tokens. GRT launched in 2020 at $0.03.

The Graph belongs in this conversation because it solves the retrieval side of the blockchain data problem. Storing data decentrally is only half the challenge. Fetching it quickly without a centralized server is the other half. The Graph handles that second part.

Internet Computer (ICP)

Internet Computer is a blockchain that deploys smart contracts and files directly on-chain. This may sound similar to the decentralized computing of Ethereum. The difference is, ICP decentralizes the entire Internet stack.

It doesn’t require traditional servers or web providers. It doesn’t rely as much on oracles as Ethereum dApps. ICP nodes can host everything from the website to dApp and the contracts. Its storage cost is several times lower than transactions on the most scalable blockchains.

ICP launched in May 2021 at $551 with 124M tokens, now trading a daily $10M to $25M.

How to Choose a Storage Coin

The right network depends on what you need to store, how long you need to store it, and whether you want to earn or spend.

Start with these three questions.

1. Is the data permanent or temporary?

Permanent records (NFT metadata, legal archives, Web3 front-ends) suit Arweave. Temporary or frequently updated data suits Filecoin, Storj, or Siacoin on pay-as-you-go terms.

2. Do you need programmable access or just storage?

If your application needs on-chain APIs, verifiable delivery proofs, or AI data endpoints, Filecoin Onchain Cloud is currently the only network offering that at mainnet scale. Plain file storage is available on all five networks.

3. Are you storing or earning?

If you want to earn by contributing disk space, Storj and Filecoin have the largest operator communities. Storj updated its node operator compensation structure in July 2026. Filecoin requires staking FIL and submitting regular storage proofs. Both have meaningful hardware requirements before income becomes meaningful.

Quick decision guide:

Permanent archive with one-time fee: Arweave
Enterprise or developer cloud workloads: Filecoin Onchain Cloud
Cloud backup and media streaming: Storj
TON-native apps or Telegram integration: TON Storage
Privacy-focused, budget-conscious storage: Siacoin

Possible Blockchain Storage Solutions

The previous projects bring new storage features that hopefully blockchain developers can model. These don’t directly solve the storage problem of the blockchain, because it’s an application layer.

Storj decentralizes storage for its users, but it doesn’t directly reduce the validator requirements of Ethereum. Filecoin creates an efficient storage marketplace, but it’s for the Filecoin blockchain.

Now, here are two possibilities that don’t centralize the blockchain:

Block Pruning. Like IPFS’ garbage collection, Ethereum and other blockchains could delete non-essential data from old blocks and transactions over time. This would slow down the size increase but also weaken the network if someone decides to manipulate those blocks— putting at risk the countless posterior blocks.
Sharding. The blockchain reduces storage by dividing block groups into partitions. Validators only process their own partition, which acts like a mini blockchain connected to the others. Think of it like splitting a large archive into parts and having different computers handle one part each. Ethereum has implemented a variant called Danksharding as part of its scaling roadmap. The on-chain storage implications for Web3 applications continue to be an active area of research, with pinning services and decentralized storage layers increasingly filling gaps that base-layer sharding alone cannot close.

The Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin sees storage as the main limitation for scalability. Not only it needs to be light, but easy enough for users not to get lazy and pay companies/pools to validate on their behalf. Only when the everyday user can run a full node without buying extra hardware, the storage problem might be solved.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Filecoin Onchain Cloud?

Filecoin Onchain Cloud is a programmable cloud service layer built on top of the Filecoin storage network. It launched on mainnet in early 2026. Developers can access on-chain APIs that deliver verifiable storage proofs, decentralized AI data endpoints, and NFT metadata feeds. Every storage deal generates an on-chain receipt confirming delivery. That is the key difference from traditional decentralized storage: you can verify that data was actually served, not just stored.

How do storage coin node operators earn money?

The mechanics differ by network. On Filecoin, providers stake FIL tokens and submit regular cryptographic proofs that data is still intact. Fail a proof window and the stake is slashed. On Storj, operators contribute disk space and bandwidth and are paid in STORJ per gigabyte stored and retrieved. Storj updated its payment model in July 2026 with a simplified pricing structure. On Arweave, the endowment model means operators receive ongoing distributions from a pool funded by user payments. All three require meaningful hardware before income becomes consistent.

What is the difference between Arweave and Filecoin?

Arweave charges once and stores permanently. Filecoin charges per storage deal on a recurring basis. Arweave suits data that must exist indefinitely with no maintenance. Filecoin suits large-scale, frequently accessed data where deal flexibility matters. Filecoin Onchain Cloud also adds programmable API access that Arweave does not currently offer at the same layer.
