The phrase 'genesis wallet' means two very different things depending on where you look. In blockchain history, it refers to the hardcoded wallet addresses that received the first coins when a network launched. In 2024 and 2025, it also refers to MyGenesis Wallet, a consumer mobile app that lets users load funds from bank accounts and cards and hold digital assets on their device.

These are not the same product. Genesis Wallet (MyGenesis) is a separate entity from Genesis Trading and Genesis Global Capital, both of which went through bankruptcy proceedings and regulatory settlements with the New York Department of Financial Services in 2023 and 2024.

This article covers both. Start with whichever matches what you are looking for.

What is a Crypto Genesis Address?

When new blockchain networks like Bitcoin first launch, the software code defines a certain number of coins to be created and credited to specific digital wallets right from inception. These are termed as genesis wallets and hold a portion of the total coin supply.

Four properties define a genesis address:

Hardcoded into the blockchain codebase at network initialization. The address exists before any user creates a wallet.

Automatically credited a predefined coin allocation. No mining required for the initial balance.

Balance persists as long as the network runs in its original form. Forks may change this.

Follows standard wallet functionality in most respects. The exception is Bitcoin's genesis address, where the original 50 BTC are unspendable due to a coding quirk in block 0.

The purpose is seeding. Genesis wallets get the ecosystem started before mining and distribution are live. They are not designed for accumulation or active trading.

MyGenesis Wallet: The Consumer Mobile Product

MyGenesis Wallet (also called NewGENESIS) is a mobile wallet app designed for everyday users. It lets you load funds from a bank account, debit card, or other payment method and hold digital assets directly on your device.

This product is separate from Genesis Trading and Genesis Global Capital. Those are institutional crypto trading and lending entities that went through bankruptcy and regulatory actions in 2023 and 2024. MyGenesis Wallet operates under its own user agreement, published in May 2024, which governs how funds are loaded, held, and managed.

What MyGenesis Wallet covers according to its official documentation:

Fund loading via bank transfer and payment cards

On-device custody of digital assets

KYC and AML compliance requirements for account holders

Customer support contacts and account recovery procedures

If you are looking for the institutional Genesis Trading service, that is a different company with a different regulatory history. The official Genesis Trading site is genesistrading.com.

Genesis Wallet vs. Genesis Trading vs. Genesis Global Capital

Three Genesis-branded entities get confused constantly. They are not the same. Here is a plain breakdown.

👉 Quick takeaway: MyGenesis Wallet, Genesis Trading, and Genesis Global Capital are distinct entities with different purposes and regulatory histories. MyGenesis Wallet is a retail consumer app operating under its own agreement. Genesis Trading and Genesis Global Capital are institutional entities with separate and ongoing regulatory proceedings.

          Subject to ongoing proceedings

The short version: if you downloaded an app or visited mygenesiswallet.com, you are using the consumer wallet product. If you were an institutional lender or borrower, Genesis Global Capital is the entity that went through bankruptcy. Genesis Trading is the OTC and trading arm.

Do not assume that regulatory actions against Genesis Trading or Genesis Global Capital automatically affect MyGenesis Wallet users. They are distinct corporate structures. That said, always verify the current status of any Genesis-branded service before depositing funds.

Why Genesis Addresses and Balances Matter

The intent, ownership and activities involving genesis wallets have an outsized influence on nascent blockchain networks - giving them special significance.

For example, large sales by a genesis wallet could suppress price discovery of a new crypto. Claims over genesis wallet ownership without valid proof can undermine reliability.

And assumed losses of genesis private keys could permanently lock chunks of supply outside circulation - altering monetary economics.

Some reasons they're crucial pieces of network history:

Provide anchors for tracing origin stories of blockchain assets

Major network events when activities involve these wallets

Enable analysis of distribution and wealth equality

Fundamental to understanding monetary policy and token dynamics

Essential for auditing total coin circulation relative to stated caps

Their special nature necessitates transparency and responsible management by creators.

Genesis Wallet Security: What You Need to Know

Security questions are the third most common theme in searches around Genesis Wallet. Whether you use MyGenesis Wallet or any other self-custody product, the same core practices apply.

Seed phrase safety is non-negotiable. Write it down on paper. Do not store it in a photo, a cloud document, or a notes app. Anyone who has your seed phrase has your funds.

Device security matters as much as the wallet itself. Use a strong PIN or biometric lock on your phone. Keep your operating system updated. Avoid accessing your wallet on public Wi-Fi without a VPN.

KYC and AML compliance is part of the MyGenesis Wallet onboarding process. This is documented in the official user agreement. Completing verification correctly protects your account and ensures you can recover access if you lose your credentials.

Account recovery in the Genesis Wallet app is covered in the NewGENESIS user guide. If you lose your password or seed phrase, the recovery steps differ depending on whether you completed KYC. Check the official user guide before you need it, not after.

Ethereum.org maintains a general wallet security resource that applies to any crypto wallet, including MyGenesis Wallet. The core advice: never share your seed phrase, use hardware wallets for large holdings, and verify you are on the official app or site before entering credentials.

The Genesis Regulatory Context: What Happened and What It Means for Wallet Users

In January 2024, Genesis Trading reached a settlement with the New York Department of Financial Services. Separately, Genesis Global Capital filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023 after the collapse of FTX created a liquidity crisis across its lending book.

These events do not automatically affect MyGenesis Wallet users. The entities are distinct. But they do matter for one reason: trust. When a brand goes through high-profile regulatory and bankruptcy actions, users of any product carrying that brand name have legitimate questions.

Three things to check before using any Genesis-branded service:

Confirm which legal entity you are dealing with. MyGenesis Wallet (mygenesiswallet.com) operates under a separate user agreement from Genesis Trading or Genesis Global Capital.

Read the current user agreement. The MyGenesis Wallet User Agreement was last published in May 2024. Check the legal page for updates.

Verify the regulatory status of the specific entity. Genesis Trading's settlement details are public via NYDFS and covered in Axios and AP News reporting. Genesis Global Capital's bankruptcy proceedings are ongoing.

If you have funds in any Genesis-branded product and are unsure which entity holds them, contact customer support using the contact information in the NewGENESIS user guide.

Bitcoin Genesis Block and Wallet

Bitcoin's genesis block was mined on January 3, 2009. It contained 50 BTC, the first coins ever created on the network. Those 50 BTC have never moved. They remain in the original genesis address to this day.

Satoshi Nakamoto is credited with mining this block. The coinbase transaction in block 0 included a now-famous message embedded in the raw data: 'The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.' It was a timestamp and a statement.

Because the genesis block was hardcoded differently from all subsequent blocks, the 50 BTC it contains are technically unspendable on the original Bitcoin protocol. They count toward the address balance but cannot be transferred under standard network rules. This is a quirk of how block 0 was coded, not a deliberate lockup.

Anyone can look up the genesis address on a public block explorer. The address is 1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7Divf Na. It still receives small donations from users who want to be part of Bitcoin history.

Frequently Asked Questions About Genesis Wallet
