CoinImpulse is adware that targets macOS. Security researchers classify it as a browser hijacker and potentially unwanted program (PUP). It gets onto your Mac almost exclusively through bundled installers: free software packages that hide CoinImpulse as an optional extra during setup. Most users never see the opt-out checkbox.

Once installed, it does three things. It injects pop-up ads into your browser. It changes your homepage and default search engine without asking. It also collects browsing data, including search queries and sites visited, which it can share with third-party advertisers.

The cryptomining claim you may read elsewhere is not supported by current security research on CoinImpulse specifically. Its documented behavior is ad injection and browser hijacking, not mining.

Follow these steps in order. Skipping the profile and LaunchAgents steps is the most common reason CoinImpulse comes back after removal.

Step 1: Remove the malicious configuration profile

CoinImpulse often installs a configuration profile that locks your browser settings. Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions), then go to Privacy and Security and look for Profiles. If you see a profile you did not install, select it and click the minus button to delete it.

Step 2: Uninstall the CoinImpulse application

Open Finder and go to the Applications folder. Drag CoinImpulse to the Trash, then right-click the Trash icon and select Empty Trash

Step 3: Delete LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons entries

Open Finder, click Go in the menu bar, then select Go to Folder. Enter each of these paths one at a time and delete any files with "CoinImpulse" in the name:

/Library/LaunchAgents/

/Library/LaunchDaemons/

~/Library/LaunchAgents

This step stops CoinImpulse from reinstalling itself on restart.

Step 4: Remove browser extensions

Safari: Open Safari, go to Settings, then Extensions. Find any CoinImpulse entry and click Uninstall.

Chrome: Open Chrome, go to Settings, then Extensions. Find CoinImpulse and click Remove.

Firefox: Open Firefox, go to Add-ons and Themes, then Extensions. Find CoinImpulse and click Remove.

Step 5: Reset browser settings

Safari: Go to Safari Settings, choose the General tab, and manually restore your preferred homepage. Clear history via History in the menu bar.

Chrome: Go to Settings, scroll to Reset settings, and click Restore settings to their original defaults.

Firefox: Type about:support in the address bar, then click Refresh Firefox.

Step 6: Run a Malwarebytes scan

Download Malwarebytes for Mac from the official site. Run a full scan to catch any remaining files the manual steps may have missed. Malwarebytes is free for on-demand scanning.

Can CoinImpulse Come Back After Removal?

Yes. This is the most common problem users report. CoinImpulse uses two persistence mechanisms to survive a basic uninstall.

First, it installs a configuration profile. This profile can restore hijacked browser settings even after you delete the app. That is why Step 1 above targets the profile before anything else.

Second, it drops files in LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons. These folders tell macOS to run certain programs automatically on login. If you only delete the app from the Applications folder and skip these folders, CoinImpulse can reappear within minutes of your next restart.

The fix is simple: complete all six steps above in order. Do not skip Step 3.

How to Prevent CoinImpulse

Preventing CoinImpulse from infecting your computer in the first place is essential to maintaining your computer's security and performance. Here are some tips to help prevent CoinImpulse:

Always choose custom installation. When installing free software, select the custom or advanced setup option rather than the express install. This reveals pre-checked extras like CoinImpulse that the default path hides.

Download only from official sources. Get apps from the Mac App Store or directly from the developer's official website. Third-party download portals are the primary distribution channel for bundled adware.

Keep macOS updated. System updates patch security vulnerabilities that adware exploits. Enable automatic updates in System Settings under General.

Install an ad blocker. A browser-level ad blocker (such as uBlock Origin) can block the redirect pages that adware uses to deliver its payload.

Run periodic Malwarebytes scans. A monthly free scan catches PUPs before they entrench themselves with persistence files.

Why Does My Computer Keep Installing CoinImpulse?

Software bundling is the main culprit. CoinImpulse travels inside free app installers, particularly video converters, download managers, and media players from third-party download sites. During installation, the CoinImpulse option is pre-checked and buried in a custom or advanced setup screen. Click through the defaults and it installs silently

If CoinImpulse keeps returning after you remove it, the persistence files in LaunchAgents or LaunchDaemons were not fully cleared. Go back to Step 3 in the removal guide above and check all three folder paths again.

A configuration profile left in place can also restore browser settings even after the app is gone. Check System Settings under Privacy and Security for any profiles you do not recognize.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CoinImpulse a virus?

Not technically. It is classified as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). It does not replicate like a virus, but it does cause real harm: it hijacks your browser, injects ads, and collects your browsing data without consent.

Does CoinImpulse affect Windows or only Mac?

Current security documentation focuses on macOS. If you are on Windows and see similar symptoms, a different adware variant is more likely responsible. The removal steps in this article are Mac-specific.

Can CoinImpulse steal my passwords?

There is no confirmed evidence it captures passwords directly. It does track browsing activity and search queries, which can expose sensitive information to third-party ad networks. Treat it as a privacy risk and remove it promptly

Which browsers does CoinImpulse affect?

Safari, Chrome, and Firefox on macOS are all documented targets. Each browser needs its own cleanup steps, covered in Step 4 above.

Do I need to pay for Malwarebytes to remove CoinImpulse?

No. Malwarebytes for Mac offers free on-demand scanning and removal. The paid version adds real-time protection, but it is not required to clean an existing infection.

Conclusion

CoinImpulse is removable. The six-step process above covers everything: the configuration profile, the LaunchAgents persistence files, and browser cleanup for Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. Skip any of those steps and it will be back after your next restart.

If the manual process feels like too much, Malwarebytes for Mac handles it in a single scan at no cost. Either way, check the FAQ section above if anything unexpected comes up during removal.
